One of my goals in teaching ESL is helping people with limited skills in English to integrate better into American society and culture. I value speaking other languages, and I have extensive experience in studying foreign languages, but when living in a country, a person's experience is much richer when he can speak that country's language. I have lived abroad myself, and I know how overwhelming it can be to live in another country, especially if one has limited abilities in communication.
In addition to my university education, I hold an ESL certificate from the Boston Language Institute. I prefer teaching older students, from high school on up. I can teach conversation, reading, writing, and business English. We can meet in a public location, but I do require 24 hours' notice of a cancellation. I speak Russian and French, if necessary for newer learners.
I have taught undergraduate students in Scottish history while at university in the UK. My ESL certificate program allowed me to teach English-learners of levels ranging from beginner to high intermediate, and I received high praise for my demeanor, attitude, and skill in managing the classes.
Professionally, my expertise in English has served me well as a proofreader, translator, and editor, and I look forward to sharing it with students.
I am available for tutoring every day, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and I can travel to meet students. My rate starts at $40 an hour. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
