About Nathan

One of my goals in teaching ESL is helping people with limited skills in English to integrate better into American society and culture. I value speaking other languages, and I have extensive experience in studying foreign languages, but when living in a country, a person's experience is much richer when he can speak that country's language. I have lived abroad myself, and I know how overwhelming it can be to live in another country, especially if one has limited abilities in communication.

In addition to my university education, I hold an ESL certificate from the Boston Language Institute. I prefer teaching older students, from high school on up. I can teach conversation, reading, writing, and business English. We can meet in a public location, but I do require 24 hours' notice of a cancellation. I speak Russian and French, if necessary for newer learners.

I have taught undergraduate students in Scottish history while at university in the UK. My ESL certificate program allowed me to teach English-learners of levels ranging from beginner to high intermediate, and I received high praise for my demeanor, attitude, and skill in managing the classes.

Professionally, my expertise in English has served me well as a proofreader, translator, and editor, and I look forward to sharing it with students.

I am available for tutoring every day, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and I can travel to meet students. My rate starts at $40 an hour. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to let me know what your requirements are!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have extensive experience and knowledge of English. Professionally, I have worked as an editor and translator (Russian to English). I also hold an ESL teaching certificate from the Boston Language Institute, where the course requirements include teaching English-learners from the community at different levels.

Grammar

I am an experienced editor, proofreader, and translator (Russian-English). My knowledge of English grammar, both for colloquial and formal usage, is extensive, and has been put to use many times in my writing, editing, and translations.
