About Marsha

Hello,

I have been special needs teacher for over 20 years, My approach to teaching is that it should include movement and creativity. I have taught students who present with a variety of conditions. Many of my former students have diagnosis of ADD, ADHD, autism, anxiety, dyslexia, and learning differences.

I enjoy getting to know a student, allowing them to show me, what type of learning works best for them. Each student is unique and it is always a mutually rewarding experience.

I believe the relationship between teacher and student requires mutual commitment and respect. Even young children can commit, as the contract is sealed with a "pinky swear".

For the past 8 years I have been teaching First Grade Sunday School. I also have a class of Special Needs Hebrew School students. My self contained class includes students from 3rd graders through 7th graders. I have private tutoring students during the school year and I substitute teach at The Wolf School. Wolf is a model private school for students who have failed in other settings. Teachers work closely with Speech Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapist.

My own children are grown and teaching allows me to perpetually engage young people.

I am looking forward to this opportunity.
Sincerely,
Marsha

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have been teaching children with special needs for over 20 years. Special Education Teacher Training with a minor in psychology. Learning differences is my calling. I enjoy finding what works best for each child.

Aspergers

As a teacher of students with Special Needs, I have been successful in using movement, music and confidence building.
My experience with Aspergers has been with middle schoolers. I have worked at The Wolf School in East Providence, RI and The Behavioral Development Center in Providence, RI.

Bible Studies

I have been teaching Sunday School/religious school for 15 years. Including bible study and current events. I also have been teaching Hebrew to students with social needs for over 20 years. My work has been mostly at Temple Beth-el in Providence, RI.

Dyslexia

I have been a special needs teacher since 1983. I have worked with many students with a variety of learning issues. I have successfully aided students with dyslexia on their road to becoming a bar/bat mitzvah. These students built confidence in themselves and successfully led an English and Hebrew reading service at age 13. Skills and tools help a student become a successful reader.

Handwriting

As a student at Lesley College, I was taught the correct techniques of teaching handwriting. I have over 20 years of teaching experience. Many students these days are given the opportunity to type their schoolwork, which is a good thing. Although, it is also important for students to be taught to write legibly as a life skill.

Hebrew

I have been a special needs Hebrew teacher for over 10 years. Many students have become bar and bat mitzvah with my private tutoring. I was the director of special needs for the Rhode Island Bureau of Jewish Education. I managed 9 sites and trained teachers working in the special needs Hebrew classroom.

Phonics

As a teacher for over 20 years I have taught many children reading and I have used phonics. Breaking a word down phonetically is the first choice to teaching reading.

Special Needs

I have been teaching children with special needs for my entire teaching career. Many students present with more than one issue, that needs to be addressed, to aide the student with proper study skills and educational tools, that they begin to rely on to become successful learners.
I am a former director of special needs for the RI Bureau of Jewish Education. I supervised and assisted 9 teachers in 9 settings to be successful with their classes and students. Special education teaching is simply good teaching practice and allowing students to learn to learning through a multi disciplinary approach.

Yoga

Yoga is part of my life. I have been practicing for over 15 years and when I was teaching at the Wolf School I used yoga with students as a relaxation technique.
