About Amy

Some people need a tutor because they need more challenge. I love to provide that challenge to high ability students, as well as helping students do better in areas of struggle. I have run Gifted programs throughout Massachusetts and have worked in regular education too. Right now I teach at The Russian School of Mathematics, even though I am not Russian! I have published a math book and science fiction story combination for kids. I have written curriculum in many areas.

Administrated Gifted and Talented Programs:
For more than 15 years, I worked in the field of Gifted Education, creating and implementing challenging curriculum in Social Studies, English and Mathematics. I modeled the use of project-based experiential curriculum in the classroom and trained elementary and middle school teachers in the skills of differentiation. I created and ran two inclusion models, project-based programs for advanced learners in the upper elementary and middle grades. I co-created materials with classroom teachers, and taught the students. Often I used interaction with the community to create real life learning situations a tenant of gifted, and I believe, all good education.

Graduate School: While I was in graduate school I had the good fortune to study with, and be a research assistant for, one of the great thinkers in the field of Educational Psychology, Dr. Carol Ann Tomlinson. Her perspective that all students enjoy being challenged at the top of their ability, and that they learn best when are taught through their areas of interest, with materials that engage them are ones that have informed my teaching and writing ever since. I completed my Master’s degree in the field of Educational Psychology, Gifted and Talented, with Dr. Tomlinson at the University of Virginia in 1996. I was the first teacher to be awarded certification in Advanced Academics in the State of Massachusetts.

I love to employ a creative approach to learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
