I have over 30 years of experience in the field of education, both as a teacher and as a curriculum developer, with a strong specialty in mathematics. I have worked with a wide range of grade levels, from elementary school to college. I received a BA in math from Harvard University and a Masters in Education from the University of New Hampshire with a double concentration in elementary education and secondary math education. I hold MA certification for secondary mathematics (Gr. 7-12) and for elementary education (K-6).
I love tutoring because it gives me an opportunity to design a customized program and approach to meet each student’s unique learning style and content needs. My emphasis is on careful diagnosis to identify and address any gaps or weaknesses in prior knowledge, on building a strong understanding of concepts and WHY procedures work, and on fostering a student’s self-confidence and self-reliance. I can also provide enrichment and challenge activities to stretch students’ understanding and help them experience the joy and excitement of math.
As an elementary school teacher, I have also taught writing skills (including spelling) and creative writing, and I have led literature discussion groups. In my many years as a homeroom teacher and advisor, I have gained extensive experience in helping students develop effective study skills and organizational strategies. Hourly rate for SAT and ACT tutoring is $90. This higher rate is due to the extensive preparation time I put in to develop personalized lessons and practice materials for each student.
Sharon is thoughtful patient. She listens. She has a great grasp of the material. I would recommend her highly She has good availability and she is flexible.
Sharon is an understanding, businesslike and patient teacher of math, who shares her enthusiasm for the subject with her student. Under Sharon's tutelage, my daughter was able to increase her math skills in preparation for taking the SAT. Sharon arrived very prepared for each lesson and remained focused on the material, no matter the length of the lesson, time of day or heat of the sun. We really appreciate her efforts and feel confident the extra attention to the subject will enhance our daughter's understanding of the intricacies of algebra.
Sharon reviewed a few topics with my daughter and my daughter appears to have mastered or nearly mastered the topics. In that it was the first lesson, it's hard to tell whether the topics covered will stick.
My daughter loved the way Sharon teaches. Sharon is the most sincere teacher I have ever come across. She made my daughter gain confidence and solve problems without any help. Couldn't thanks her enough. She also prepared my daughter for
An algebra 1 test in 2 months. Best teacher ever.
Sharon has been tutoring my son for two years. The instruction he was receiving at his school was very uneven. I picked Sharon because she had an undergraduate degree in math and had taught in elementary, middle and high school. Sharon understands that one size does not fit all. Children approach math problems in different ways. Sharon is very comfortable with this. She is more than patient. She is encouraging and in this way my son has developed the math confidence he needs. What I particularly appreciate is her ability to teach math through real life situations, making it more than just a series of procedures, and always relevant. She comes prepared, knows what she wants to hit, but she is incredibly flexible. You can ask her to cover anything. She doesn't need to go home and prepare a new lesson because she knows math. We have found her to be easy to work with, and worth every penny. Highly recommend her.
Sharon is an excellent tutor patient and always willing to go the extra mile to make sure our daughter is grasping the material. She is always coming with new strategies to help our daughter get concept.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have the expertise to tutor elementary students (K-6th). I have 12+ years of experience teaching students in grades 4-6. My specialty has been in mathematics, but I have also worked with the language arts program (teaching writing skills, spelling, and creative writing, and leading literature discussion groups), with cross-curricular units that involve social studies and the arts, and with helping students develop study skills and learn to manage homework. In addition, I served for 2 years as the math consultant for a very small independent K-5 school. This job provided me with opportunities to work with primary grade students (K-3rd) as well as deepening my understanding of the math curriculum in the early grades.
I hold M.A. certification in elementary education (K-8).
I have the knowledge and experience to be an effective tutor for ISEE prep. I have considerable experience with teaching and tutoring the grade level content that is tested on the ISEE. I have researched the set up and scoring of the test and the types of directions/questions included on it. I have used ISEE test prep books with previous students to help in reviewing content and teaching relevant test-taking strategies.
