About Kurt

REASONS I SHOULD BE YOUR TUTOR OF CHOICE:

I stand by my service and am confident in my abilities. I am a licensed English teacher with five years classroom experience and 20 years personal tutoring experience. I am an excellent guitarist with over 20 years of experience. I am willing to come to your home or any mutually agreeable location for private in-person tutoring and group lessons.

I love teaching, it is my passion to help others learn and to help them appreciate learning. I have extensive experience working with students who have Individual Education Plans (IEPs) in place. I am easygoing, patient, and understanding. I make tutoring a pleasant, fun experience for my students. I am flexible and always looking for new students, which is why I offer great incentives for referrals.

Above all else, my tutoring lessons are strongly student-driven. Some of the first questions I will ask a student in any of the subjects I tutor: What is your ultimate goal that you hope to accomplish through tutoring? What do you feel are your strengths and weaknesses? Additionally, I develop a bond with my students learning more about their interests, which allows me to tailor my lessons based around these interests.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (ELA):
I focus on constructive, positive approaches building off the strengths and interests of my students. In the subject of English, I teach students how to analyze reading assignments, strategies in test taking, effective approaches to writing assignments, and strengthening their knowledge of vocabulary terms.

ESL/ESOL:
Similar to ELA tutoring, I have worked with many ESL students who range in their familiarity with English. My lessons are primarily focused on the student's goals. Whether you are looking to strengthen your skills in conversation, reading, writing, or make yourself more marketable for a job interview, my lessons will address your preferences.

GUITAR:
I take a full immersion approach to guitar lessons. Students begin learning to play their guitar from the very first lesson. I teach students about the guitar and its components, different styles and techniques of playing, and encourage learning many types of music.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am an English tutor specializing in helping students improve their writing skills, reading comprehension, and literary analysis.

I attended Bridgewater State College where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English with a writing concentration. I also tutored and taught English for five years in public schools.

ESL/ESOL

In my experience teaching in public schools for five years, I've helped many ESL students comfortably and successfully transition into English speaking surroundings.

In the first lesson, I ask students what their specific goals are in improving their English. A student's goals are one of the most important elements and should have a specific, attainable target goal. For example, some people need an academic approach while others are only interested in strengthening conversational skills. I help my students narrow down their goals into "bite-size" chunks, which reduces stress and helps the student avoid feeling overwhelmed.

I also ask my students what they "think" are their strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes. This approach helps me determine the areas to work with the most. With this strategy the student is leading the tutoring lessons.

Guitar

I am a guitar instructor for beginner and intermediate guitar players looking for the basic skills to build a solid foundation. My lessons will help early learners to discover where they want to take their newfound guitar skills.

I've been teaching guitar for nearly 20 years and playing for 23 years. I actively play guitar in my church band and enjoy dabbling in recording music.

I create an enjoyable, active, hands-on environment for the student. Students begin to learn how to play guitar chords within the first lesson.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions!

Proofreading

As an accomplished English major from Bridgewater university, I have extensive experience in proofreading. My work experience during the past 15 years has relied heavily on my proofreading skills from teaching in public schools, utilizing my writing and proofreading skills in a business atmosphere, and tutoring students.

Whether you need to learn how to proofread, need proofreading as a service, or are interested in proofreading and editing services, I am available to assist.

Vocabulary

As an English tutor in the public schools, for five years I helped students strengthen their skills in, among other things, understanding and defining vocabulary. Using reading passages, I taught students to use context clues to help define unfamiliar vocabulary terms. Another useful practice in analyzing vocabulary is a brief overview of the Latin roots (ex. multi for multiple or multimedia) and Greek roots (ex. phobia for claustrophobia or phobic) as well as prefixes (as in fore for before or foreshadow) and suffixes (as in -ful for helpful or thoughtful).

Writing

I have taught English writing and literature for five years in public schools. I also tutor students in preparation for state testing.
