Science for me is fun and exciting. It is fascinating to find out why things happen the way they happen. Similarly, I experience the same enjoyment in math when I understand the way numbers behave and then apply that understanding to real life situations. We are all surrounded by math and science, and a practical knowledge of them makes the world that much less mysterious.
I teach and tutor because I can find no greater satisfaction than to instill the excitement I feel about the maths and sciences in others.
When I tutor a student, the first thing I do is evaluate what piece of the foundation is missing. Every science and math concept is built upon the foundations laid last week, month, or year. Trying to teach a concept or technique without the right supports beneath is merely postponing the problem until later. So often, once the root difficulty is found (and fixed!), a plethora of other problems and fears diminish or disappear. Once you understand it, science and math is fun and easy.
My style is not one who instructs. Instead, I lead and guide. The lessons we teach ourselves are the ones we remember best. Once I understand what concept a student needs to be taught or clarified, I devise a series of problems or logic steps that the student can solve in succession. Ultimately this will allow the student to start from a place of confidence and comprehension giving them a hands-on understanding as to why the new technique or theory works.
If you're anxious to learn, I'm anxious to teach!
I come to teaching having spent over fifteen years in industry, building products of all shapes and descriptions from stereo speakers to collagen hemostats, from holograms to helium leak detectors. I found some of the greatest satisfaction in my jobs came from teaching and assisting my staff, so I am now excited to be focusing my career towards this type of pursuit. Over the last three years I have been either tutoring or working in classroom settings. In 2010 I earned my Massachusetts Physics Teaching License.
I have a Bachelors of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT and an MBA from Babson College. My hobbies include hockey, skiing, golfing (poorly), and (when time permits) theater. Nelson has been helping our son with his pre-calc off and on since September. He helps to demystify any math problem my son seems to have and does it with a great sense of humor. My son looks forward to his sessions every time. Nelson is always on time and responds quickly to emails. My only hesitation with writing such a positive review is that word will get out of Nelson's awesomeness, and he will become less available to us!! All joking aside, Nelson is an excellent math tutor and has helped my son tremendously through out the year.
My daughter has gone from 'iffy' to being nominated to the National Honor Society. I think Nelson has helped make this possible in math & physics.
Nelson is great. He was tutoring my younger daughter in Pre-Calculus, when my college freshman daughter had a "Statistics Final" emergency. Nelson squeezed her in that night, even though he wasn't sure he was going to be able to help her. To make a long story short, he was a tremendous help, she got a 92 on the exam, and ended the semester with an A. I highly recommend him as a tutor. (He helped our Pre-Calculus daughter too!)
Mr. S. has worked absolute wonders for our son, helping him bring grades up from D's to A's. Not sure what magic he is working but the before tutoring session and after tutoring session contrast is unbelievable. Keep up the great work, Mr. S. If you can get this man as a tutor, you and your child will not be disappointed. He is better than excellent.
My son's calculus grade has gone from a C to an A since starting sessions with Nelson. Taking the time to identify the stumbling blocks in earlier math skills has made all the difference. Thank you!!
Nelson quickly identified my son's issues and approached them with a sense of humor so the criticism was well accepted.
WyzAnt Tutoring has proven to be a life saver for me. After seven years of intense studying I was completing my last statistics class before graduation. Two weeks into the class, I had a failing average because no matter how hard I studied the material, it just was not making any sense to me. I immediately contacted WyzAnt and they connected me with Nelson S. Nelson accommodated my unusual work schedule and arrived at my home ready to work. I met with Nelson three times and because of his outstanding teaching style I began to grasp the material and finally had the "ah-ha" moment I was so desperately seeking. I would not have passed this class had I not contacted WyzAnt and had I not been connected with Nelson. Thank you WyzAnt for connecting me with such a highly qualified tutor, you are a real life saver. I highly recommend WyzAnt and Nelson S to any students who find themselves in a similar position.
Nelson did a nice job with my daughter. He took a lot of fear out of the unit circle for her. Just what the Dr. ordered. We will see him again.
Nelson has made an immediate impact. We were concerned that our sons would resist the weekly sessions, but that has not been the case at all. It is very evident to us that they recognize the value of their time with Nelson (although they may not always admit it!) and we can see improvement in their work. We are delighted to be working with Nelson and recommend him most strongly.
We enjoy seeing our son's progress, and Nelson has been the one to get him to understand all the problems he needed to overcome to do that. He is a great teacher as well as a mentor. Thank you Nelson.
My son had his first lesson with Nelson this morning and I feel so encouraged that Nelson is going to make a difference in my son's learning. My son was receptive and is looking forward to his future sessions. I will post comments throughout our experience. Nelson, thank you for such a positive first experience with a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Nelson S. passed a background check on 6/17/15. The check was ordered by another user through First Advantage. For more information, please review the background check information page.
After sending a message to Nelson, you will be able to order a new background check for $7.99. As part of your tutor selection process, we encourage you to run updated background checks. Please also review the safety tips for hiring tutors.
