About Kathryn

I am passionate about language and love working one on one with students to spark their own passions and help them communicate them on the page or through oral presentations. I hold a Master's Degree from the Monterey Institute of International Studies - well-known for their prestigious program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I am also a student of language myself many times over and understand the cultural as well as grammatical challenges that can come up for students looking to work on their English.

In addition to second language students, I have also taught high school and university level composition and creative writing classes. I have a background in literary performance and have instructed a variety of groups in the art of storytelling, experience that makes me very comfortable advising people in public speaking and how to create effective presentations in front of a group.

I am a solid listener and always try to meet students where they are. A tutoring situation should be just that - a time for tailoring lessons to an individual's specific needs. I try to work lessons in grammar, language or writing skills around subject matter that interests the student. I engage them with contemporary texts and authentic materials. My writing feedback is always narrative and comprehensive - not just telling a student what is wrong, but acknowledging what that writer was attempting, while guiding them on techniques to express it more clearly. I have high expectations for students to work with the themes we have discussed between meeting sessions.

In addition to my degree and teaching experience, I am a working writer and have extensive experience in public speaking and performance as well as teaching in conversation, grammar and writing.

I offer free 20-minute consultations for you to decide if you think I am a match for your needs.

I look forward to assisting you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have presented at professional TESOL conferences and led meetings as an ESL advisor - both with students and colleagues. I have a background in literary stage performance and live radio interviews and have instructed a variety of groups in the art of storytelling, experience that makes me very comfortable advising people in public speaking and how to create effective presentations in front of a group. I have taught public speaking skills to Hungarian high schoolers, as well as international business professionals at the Monterey Institute's Custom Language Services. I taught a special workshop on translating your work from page to stage for a college writing center.
