About Mindy

I have been an English Language Arts Tutor and Educator for twenty years! I was a College Professor for five years and decided to Freelance. Tutoring inspires me and I enjoy working with people of any age, kids to adults and seniors too; students and professionals.

I taught English online for a year and now I tutor online which is fun! I'm Montessori trained in Elementary Level ages 6-12; MA state certified/licensed to teach English in grades 5-12; I'm AP Language and Composition certified, and have lots of experience tutoring students who have various learning differences such as: ADHD, Dyslexia, Visually and Hearing Impaired, Gifted and Talented and English Language Learners.

I have a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing Poetry and am a nationally published poet. I also studied poetry with two famous poets; James Tate and Robert Bly. I was a Poet-in-Residence at an independent school for gifted children and more recently was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Creative Writing and Literature.

The subjects I specialize in are: Poetry, Eco-Literature, Nonfiction, Reading, Writing, Literature in English of any genre and time period and culture, Handwriting, Creative Writing, Essay Writing, Vocabulary, Study Skills, Researching, Grammar, Proofreading/Editing, Test Prep and Career Development Skills. I will assess your skill level and interests and create a learning plan that we can agree on together, which will help strengthen your abilities and confidence. I don't assign homework unless you request it. We may use iPads during sessions for visual and interactive stimulation...and to be tech savvy cool. I will communicate regularly with your classroom teacher if you'd like, so we are all on the same page. I also will give you progress reports every month so you can track your progress.

I prefer our first meeting to be a free consultation where we share ideas and see if this feels like a good fit. I will never bill for a lesson in which the student or parent is not completely satisfied with my tutoring.

I try to be flexible with my time. While I do have a 24 hr cancellation policy, I offer makeup sessions. I can reserve study rooms at the nearest library to you or tutor right in your home. However, I am happy to travel to any location that is easiest for you and if we meet online for a tutoring session, that's just easy.

I tutor all year round, so if you're thinking about signing up for a Summer Tutor, I do that too, with a schedule which allows you or your son/daughter to enjoy their summer relaxing and playing while strengthening your/their academic skills for the start of school in the Fall.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I used to teach a Business English class to high school and continuing ed. students. One of the units in the class was on Career Development. My students took free online personality and career skills tests I researched for them, then I would help them organize and understand the results and develop a step by step timeline to achieve the career they've been looking for.

College Counseling

I have tutored students specifically in the College Counseling process. I help them decide what college demographics appeal to them, research majors and schools in various tiers that offer what the student is looking for. I also help them organize their application process, college essays, financial aid, entrance exams, interviews etc.

As a College Professor, I academically advised a caseload of 20 students who needed guidance with choosing their classes each semester based on their abilities and interests.

Cooking

I have worked as a professional artisan bread baker, and as a head breakfast cook and baker. I am a skilled cook and can make any recipe given to me. I have also taught cooking classes to children and taught them about nutrition through afterschool programs. For over five years I worked as management in an organic food co-op.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was the Director of an afterschool program for children in grades 1-6. I designed the curriculum and led the activities. It was so much fun! I also had Montessori training in child development and elementary education in all subjects for children between the ages of 6-12. I worked as an Assistant Elementary Guide in a Montessori school giving lessons in all subjects.

Amazing!!! We LOVED Mindy.

Mindy tutored our 6th grade son to help him improve his English/writing skills before entering a new middle school. From the moment we met her, she was a perfect fit. She had a passion for the subject, which engaged our son immediately and throughout. And, she had such a kind and gentle yet smart, playful, and fun manner, that he truly loved his time with her. He actually told us that he felt pe
