About Jennifer

Hi! Welcome to my page! I've been a certified teacher and tutor for over twelve years. I am interested in helping students of all ages with Spanish, English, Reading and Writing (Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary, Proofreading and Editing), and Study Skills. What sets me apart from other teachers is my strong balance of being serious, focused and professional, yet easy-going and humorous. My tutoring environment is one where students are able to open their minds and learn, while also feeling safe when they make mistakes. Comfortable mistakes are necessary in order to climb the learning curve. I also instill confidence by creating opportunities for students to succeed by building upon their strengths. Learning from someone who connects, motivates, and makes the process fun (when possible), is pivotal. My experience as a master educator will help deliver content with strategies that are unique to the needs of my students.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English with a concentration in Journalism, a minor in Psychology, and a Masters in Education. I have taken varied classes in ELL/ESL instruction toward TESL certification. I am a certified public and private school educator, teaching at the elementary and middle school levels. I am fluent in Castilian and Latin American Spanish, both in writing and speaking. I taught Spanish and English to adults in business, and also taught third and fourth grade in a bilingual (Spanish/English) international school in Latin America.

I have loved Spanish since my first class in 9th grade. I later became an AP Spanish student, and a member of the Spanish National Honor Society. I took Spanish for all four years of high school, and tested out of it in college because of being advanced. I lived in the Dominican Republic for seven years, and have traveled extensively throughout Latin America, Central America and Spain. I am well-versed in the language of travel, as well as the culture of Latin America and Spain.

Along with teaching Spanish, teaching Reading and Writing are my passion. I've attended many instructional workshops and seminars to learn new and innovative strategies to teach these skills. I have spent a considerable amount of time perfecting my ability to effectively differentiate instruction. Struggling readers experience much success after working with me, and even my exceptional students are engaged and challenged. My specialty is also guiding students to improve their writing from the first thought to the final draft. I understand the structure of topic sentences, thesis statements, paragraphs, and essays. Along with essay knowledge, I have a solid understanding of grammar mechanics as well.

I love tutoring: nothing beats the one-on-one attention. With the right person for the job (that's me!), all students can and will achieve their own personal level of excellence.

Thank you for reading!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

As an English major, I have a strong understanding of grammatical concepts. This understanding was furthered as a professional writer, and later as a teacher. I have also prepared several high school students on the ACT English test.

ACT Reading

As an English major and voracious reader, I have strong comprehension skills. I am a certified teacher with over 12 years of experience. I have taught reading skills for much of that time. I have also prepared several high school students on the ACT Reading test.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelors in English and Masters in Elementary Education. I am licensed to teach K-6 in the state of RI and K-8 in NJ. I have been teaching for 15 years.

English

I have a Bachelor's in English. I was a 5th grade English teacher for 3 classes of 25 students for 2 years. It is my favorite and strongest subject overall.

ESL/ESOL

I taught for 6 years in a self-contained ESL classroom in a bilingual school in the Dominican Republic. I also have TESL graduate level courses under my belt. I have tutored various students with English as their second language.

Geography

I am a certified elementary teacher who has instructed geography for over 10 years. I am also a world traveler!

Grammar

I taught grammar extensively as an ELL teacher in a bilingual school. I also teach it in minilessons in my 4th grade classroom. I tutored various students in grammar as well. I am persnickety about grammar and am known among my peers as the person to proofread and edit work with.

Literature

I was an English major in my undergrad. I read both British and American literature and poetry. I love the classics, and love teaching them too.

Marketing

I have a degree in communications and a part of that was studying marketing and public relations extensively. I worked for a PR firm for 4 years, and worked in sales and marketing at the corporate level of a famous retailer.

Phonics

I have a masters in education and had to take several reading and phonics classes. I also have taken several linguistics classes toward ESL certification which focus very heavily on phonetics.

Praxis

I have been a Praxis Tutor before. I've helped students better understand the key content and strategy, and diagnosed the exact subject matter areas in which improvement was needed. I also created a custom-tailored Praxis tutoring plan to help teach that content. Beyond that, I took the Praxis and passed it. I am a highly qualified certified teacher. I have been teaching for more than 12 years, and have a masters in education.

Prealgebra

I am a certified elementary school educator, teaching in 4th and 5th grade where we worked with the Singapore Math which has an intense focus on prealgebra. I also took algebra in high school and college and was very advanced in the subject.

Proofreading

I possess strong editing, writing, and communication skills. I am adept at analyzing and comprehending complex documents. I also demonstrate a mastery of the English
language including grammar, punctuation, syntax, etc.

I am extremely attentive and detail-oriented. I have successfully taught my students how to proofread as a part of the writing process. I also proofread as a teacher when I review my students' writing.

Psychology

I majored in Psychology in my undergrad years, and had to take several psychology classes to obtain my masters in education.

Reading

Reading is my favorite subject as an elementary school teacher of 12+ years. I have attended various workshops and seminars to keep up to date with the latest research for best practices in teaching reading. It is the area where I have seen the most growth in my students over the years-especially with the ELL population. I have managed to create a classroom of voracious readers.

SAT Reading

I was an English major in undergrad, and have my masters in education. I have been teaching for 12 years and have tutored students taking the SAT Reading section.

Social Studies

I have taught elementary Social Studies for over 12 years.

Spanish

I formally studied Spanish throughout high school and in college. I lived in Latin America for seven years and while there traveled to other Latin American countries and Spain. This allowed me the opportunity to experience and learn the many variations of the Spanish language.

I am a versatile, patient Spanish tutor with exceptional communication and critical thinking skills apart from being genuinely excited to teach the language. I have a firm grasp of vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure and written communication rules for Spanish and English. Learning from someone who has already spent years studying the target language can be extremely valuable. I have consciously learned the language step by step and can guide my students through the labyrinth of confusion they may be encountering.

Spelling

I taught spelling as an elementary educator for over 12+ years. I have also attended many workshops to learn new strategies for teaching spelling in this changing society.

Study Skills

I have been teaching for over 12 years. In one school I taught at, my students were receiving grades and taking exams for the first time. I helped them learn study skills so they could be successful. I taught everything from taking notes, outlining, index card use, to stress management. I've also been studying my whole life and use strategies that help me for my students.

TOEFL

I have prepared many students for success on the exam and assisted them in attaining proficiency in English. I worked in a language institute for adults in business in Latin America. I tutor students here in the US as well. I am an ESL/ELL educator as well.

Vocabulary

I taught vocabulary as a part of the reading curriculum in all my elementary classrooms over the past 12+ years. It is also a part of my writing classes when we discuss the importance of word choice in an effective piece. I also tutored several students in vocabulary for the SATS.

Writing

I taught writing skills as a part of the curriculum as an elementary school teacher and as a tutor for elementary and middle school students. I have an undergraduate degree in English and Journalism. I am a writer and enjoy helping students find their voice.
