Bio

Hi!
My name is Jeff, and I am an experienced tutor for students from middle school through college! I have tutored many subjects, but I specialize in two areas: math/science, and the Romance languages (particularly Latin, French and Spanish). I work with students looking to keep their skills sharp through extra practice, and those looking to keep up with the pace of their courses!

I have a master's in teaching, and have taught math and Spanish at the middle and high school level. My speciality in tutoring is working with students who struggle to understand not only what they're doing, but why they're doing it. Providing foundations and understanding has allowed me to see my students become effective, independent learners.

Latin,

Latin

I have been studying Latin since I was 12, continuing through college level. This also inspired my study of linguistics and French and Spanish (Romance languages that derive from Latin). I have translated many authors, including Caesar, Cicero, Ovid, Vergil and many others. Students who start off misunderstanding Latin can easily be convinced of its beauty through the epic tales of war, and the sweet love poetry that can be found.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I am a licensed math teacher for middle and high school, currently working as a special education math teacher. I have worked with students in grades 4-12 on improving their basic math skills, including pre-algebra and algebra.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I am a licensed math teacher for middle and high school, currently working as a special education math teacher. I have taught and tutored algebra 2 - taking the topics of arithmetic and algebra 1, and going both more in-depth with the concepts, and more abstract. By using algebra to model real-world problems, students can understand the meaning, develop the rules and apply mathematical reasoning to them to gain more advanced understanding.
Calculus,

Calculus

I have a degree in math education, focusing on secondary (middle and high school) math. I studied math in high school (through Calculus AP) and in college, with courses including advanced calculus and linear algebra. Calculus is much easier and more exciting than it normally gets credit for, and I love helping people see the light.
Geometry,

Geometry

As a teacher and tutor, I have taught geometry to many students. Geometry takes many forms - basic shapes, putting shapes onto a coordinate plane, and using the tools of algebra to study the shapes in more depth. I teach geometry using a combination, understanding what and why we study from the different perspectives, and using deep understanding to develop "shortcuts" to solving problems.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

While precalculus can seem complex and challenging, it provides strong foundational math knowledge for calculus and other advanced math areas. I have worked with students to map out the foundations, understand the different aspects of precalculus including trigonometry, and devise strategies for developing strong understanding.

ISEE

As a graduate of a high-ranking high school which required the ISEE, I know the stress that a high-stakes test puts on students. I work with students not only to assure them that they have the necessary skills and knowledge, but I use my teaching background and my experience preparing students for the ISEE, SAT and MCAS to ensure that they have the strategies to support the content to pass the test.
