About Christine

I have a BA from Princeton in Applied Economics and a Master's from Oxford (UK) in Applied Sociology. I worked in corporate marketing for many years and was known for my excellence in research, organization, analysis, writing and presentation. People have referred to me as a Microsoft Office "wizard"! I was also recognized for my success in training, mentoring and motivating struggling employees.

Later I studied for a teaching certificate in social studies and did some subbing in elementary and secondary classrooms, but was not able to find permanent employment in teaching. After studying for a paralegal certificate, I spent some time as an immigration paralegal. I've lived abroad, worked with people from all over the world, and I started teaching English to new immigrants in 8th grade. I am the mother of three learning disabled young adults, and I understand how to motivate and reach students challenged by ADHD, dyslexia and other learning issues. But I also love working with higher ed students to improve their academic writing and public speaking.

Why should you select me as a tutor for you or your child? Yeah, I've got a lot of expertise. But I'm also warm, flexible and funny. You'll like working with me. And isn't that the most important thing?

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I studied Anthropology at Princeton and Oxford, earning A's in those classes. I have maintained a strong interest in this subject since that time, and have stayed abreast of developments in the field.

Business

My major for my Bachelor's Degree at Princeton was operations research and applied economics, with a focus on business optimization through quantitative analysis. I joined the business world after completing my Master's at Oxford, holding positions in Sales, Marketing, Market Research and I.T. My career was focused on the use of quantitative analysis techniques to maximize revenue and minimize costs so as to generate the maximum amount of profit. In my last position, I was a Director of Sales Optimization with 48 people reporting to me. I participated in numerous cross-company task forces, working closely with individuals from Finance, Operations, Product Development, Public Affairs, Procurement, Marketing and Sales.

Cooking

My mother had a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics and a Master's Degree in Nutrition. She worked as a Home Economics teacher for many years. At home, cooking was always from scratch, with a focus on nutritious meals with a variety of textures and colors. I learned many cooking techniques from an early age, along with food safety and nutritional values. I am still a "from scratch" cook and over the years have mastered expert-level techniques and expanded my repertoire to include many ethnic dishes. I have also taken advance of new learnings in the field, deploying techniques that improve the quality of the food prepared while saving time and/or money.

Elementary (K-6th)

A few years ago, I attended National Louis to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching. I did not complete the degree (pursued another career interest instead), but completed all requirements for the degree except for the Student Teaching component. I am well-versed in the theory and application of techniques to help young learners to achieve success in school. Some of my experience comes from successfully tutoring my own three children, all of whom struggled in school. Today, two of them are college graduates.

English

I was a high scorer on the SAT as a teenager, and won a national merit scholarship. I graduated from Princeton summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa and third in my class. I was a semi-finalist for a Rhodes scholarship and won a Marshall Fellowship to pursue graduate studies in the UK. There, I earned a Master's degree with highest honors. More recently, I studied for a secondary instruction teaching certificate at National Louis, earning straight A's in all courses. My area of specialty was Social Studies.

Marketing

I worked in the fields of Marketing, Marketing Science, Marketing Information Systems and Market Research for 22 years. Thus my experience spans a wide range of Marketing-related activities and brought me into closed contact with senior Marketing Management throughout my career.

Microsoft Excel

I'm a hands-on Microsoft Office practitioner with over 15 years of daily experience. I can help you master the basics of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, or help you become a power user. I have successfully taught MS-Office to people as young as 12 and as old as 80. No matter what it is you need to do, I can teach you how to do it efficiently. Let me be your Guru!

Microsoft Outlook

I utilized Microsoft Outlook from its first inception in the late 1990s through the latest version of Outlook 2013. I have extensively used the email, calendar and contact manager functions of Outlook. I am familiar with the task manager function but have not found the note taking or journal keeping functions as effective as other strategies. I am considered to be a "wizard" with respect to Outlook Email and Outlook Calendar.

Political Science

I was a Social Science major at Princeton and studied both theoretical and applied Political Science. I began with a year of political philosophy and theory beginning with Plato and ending with Marx. Later, I studied the political systems and unique challenges of political entities across the ages. I received A's in all Political Science courses. Later, I trained at National Louis University to be a secondary Social Studies teacher. I had to qualify in all social science subjects, including Political Science, based on prior coursework and proficiency exams. At National Louis I supplemented my knowledge of my field with a strong theoretical and practical understanding of "how to teach". I am well qualified to tutor students in Political Science.

Sewing

My mother was a home economics teacher who made all of her clothes and most of the items worn by my father, brother and myself. I learned to sew at the age of 10 and have constructed garments ranging from trousers to nightgowns, dresses, blouses, vests and shirts. I am experienced with a variety of alterations and mending techniques. I have also sewed items for the home such as pillow covers and window treatments. I have been sewing for a total of 48 years.

Social Studies

I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Economics and my Master's Degree in Sociology, both social science fields. During my academic career, I also studied History, Geography, Psychology and Political Science. Later, I studied at National Louis University for a teaching certificate in secondary education with a concentration in Social Studies.

Sociology

While studying at Princeton for my Bachelor's Degree in Applied Economics, I also took a variety of Sociology courses. After graduating from Princeton, I was awarded a Marshall Fellowship for post-graduate study in the U.K. I chose to attend Nuffield College, Oxford, a post-graduate institution focusing exclusively on the social sciences. There, I earned a Master's Degree in Applied Sociology. I read a broad range of Sociology Theory and wrote a thesis on the long-term and cumulative effects of heavy television viewing on people's lifestyle and world view. Later, I studied at National Louis University for a secondary teaching certificate with a focus in Social Studies.

Study Skills

I studied at National Louis University for a secondary teaching certificate. The curriculum -- both theoretical and practical included a variety of techniques for direct teaching of study skills to students. As the parent of three learning-disabled children, I conducted study skills tutoring in my own home over a period of more than 15 years.
