About Travis

I have over 10 years of professional music experience, which began simultaneously while working on my undergraduate degree, continued through my earning of a Master's degree through to the present. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Connecticut State University where I studied Music Composition and Theory while also privately studying in Jazz guitar performance. I then went on to earn my Master of Music degree from New York University in the field of Music Technology, where I focused on electronic music composition and music production.

I have a great deal of experience in teaching and tutoring. While studying for my Bachelor's degree I taught private and group guitar lessons to a wide range of ages, from elementary school students through adults. I also worked as a Music Computer Lab proctor at CCSU, where I assisted students in the operations of digital music software. Once at NYU I immediately took a part-time position working as a tutor for a middle school music class in Manhattan. The following semester I was hired as a tutor for the NYU Music and Performing Arts Professions department in the area of computer programming for music. Simultaneously I worked as a production assistant for the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, a music production and business school within the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. While there my major responsibility was assisting undergraduate students in operation of the school's two professional grade studios. After graduating from NYU I immediately took an adjunct position at a college in New Jersey, where I have been since 2011. Here, I have taught classes in Music Recording, Electronic and Computer Music, and Music Fundamentals, while during the Spring 2012, Fall 2012, and Spring 2013 semesters I was the co-director of their Digital Music Ensemble, a computer based music performance group, putting on high quality performances each semester, both at this school and at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Additionally, in the summer of 2014 I taught a two week summer camp in music production for high school students through the Center for Innovative and Professional Learning.

My approach to tutoring is focused primarily on the goals established by the student. Instruction will be directed towards those goals, while certain fundamental concepts and skills will be discussed and reinforced. Because of the one-on-one nature of tutoring, all work will be hands on, with students implementing concepts mid-lesson.

I am available for tutoring in the following areas:
- Music composition, including traditional acoustic composition, composition for mixed electronic and acoustic instrumentation, and purely electronic composition
- Music production, including music recording, mixing, audio editing, and creative compositional techniques using the music studio
- Music theory, including introductory music fundamentals, tonal theory, jazz improvisation theory
- Electronic music performance, both in commercial genres using commercial software, and development of own tools for music performance
- Audio programming in Max and Pure Data

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have an undergraduate degree in Music Composition and Theory from Central Connecticut State University. I focused on electroacoustic music composition while studying Music Technology at NYU. At NYU I studied with esteemed composers such as Morton S., Robert R., and Joan L. I am fluent in both acoustic and electroacoustic composition, and many of my compositions feature custom built software using the Max programming language.

Guitar

I have played guitar for over 18 years. While at Central Connecticut State University I studied jazz guitar and improvisation. For three years prior to moving to New York City I taught private guitar lessons to students as young as elementary school and as old as adults.

Music Production

I have earned a Master of Music degree in Music Technology from New York University. While studying for my Master's Degree I worked at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music as a production assistant. Over the past three years I have taught music production courses at Ramapo College of New Jersey, including the beginner and intermediate sections of Music Recording and Electronic and Computer Music.
