About Katrina

I have been teaching for 12 years at 3 Independent schools. I have taught grades 5-9 in literature, reading comprehension, social studies, U.S history, English, and western civilization. While in college I tutored public speaking and in my first teaching position trained and created an award winning middle school debate team. I have worked with autistic students, E.L.L. students, and those with a variety of learning profiles. I believe that all students have the ability to learn and be successful in their academic endeavors. It is my job to find a strategy that allows the student to access content information; that can be done using primary source documents, textbooks, the internet, and graphic organizers. I believe it is always best to teach using examples from students' own lives that can connect to the material being learned. I love teaching and I love the students I teach. I currently tutor several students in U.S. history, reading comprehension, and S.S.A.T. prep (the test for students applying to Independent high schools). Over the last 9 years I have tutored many 7th and 8th grade students currently attending independent schools in SSAT prep. I have tutored students in public schools who are applying to private secondary schools. The service I provide includes reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and reasoning, math as well as tips and tools to understand the test itself. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have been teaching U.S. history for over 12 years. I have passed the Massachusetts Certification exam in History.

Anthropology

MY undergraduate degree is in Social/Cultural Anthropology. I teach multiple history classes through the lens of Anthropology, looking at people and the choices they make in creating their societies. This perspective assists students in understanding the cultural norms that develop creating hegemonic groupings.

European History

I have taught European History, ancient and modern for 9 years. I have passed the Massachusetts certification exam in secondary history.

Handwriting

I am currently tutoring several students in grades k-4 who are specifically focused on handwriting. I am working with students on beginning handwriting and cursive.

Social Studies

I have been teaching a middle school class in Geography for 10 years. The class involves geographic Core Concepts as well as the use of technology to view physical features of the Earth. The class also studies societies using physical, cultural, economic, human-environment exchange, and political concepts of geographical study.

Softball

I was an assistant softball coach at the middle school level for 6 years. I have also coached a developmental team.
