About Andy

I hold my BA in History and my Master's in Education with a concentration in Special Education. Currently, I am employed as a Life Science and ELA teacher, as well as an Academic Interventionist in the Springfield School system. Previously, I worked as a paraprofessional for four years, teaching grades 7-12. Additionally, I have experience working with and tutoring struggling readers. While I am currently employed in a middle school, I also have worked as a camp counselor and as an after school program coordinator for students as young as 4.

I have worked primarily with grades 7 and 8, although frequently have interacted with students all the way through high school. I have come to serve as a role model and mentor with many students who were struggling with executive functioning deficits. I helped them to find their strengths while providing emotional support and guidance. Among my colleagues, I am regarded as consistently calm, collected, and persistent. I am known to negotiate with teachers to ensure that the needs of students are met, and to create a learning environment in which all students can be successful.

Previously, I have worked at the Hampshire College Farm Camp, where I led groups of 4-12 year olds in farm chores, craft projects and animal husbandry. This provided me with valuable experience and the ability to work easily with children of all ages. Prior to working at the Farm Camp, I had interned at Old Sturbridge Village, where I was later hired as a Museum Interpreter of 1830's history. I imparted this knowledge to a wide range of visitors, ranging from young children to historians.

When working with students, I like to establish a casual and relaxing environment that still manages to lay out clear guidelines of what needs to be accomplished. Among students, I am known for my humor and laid back, yet persistent approach. I do not believe in yelling at or pressuring students, but rather talking with them to see what their needs and/or obstacles are, and how to best address them. I recognize the needs of each of my students, and I am flexible in order to make sure that these needs are met.

I currently live in Easthampton; however, I would gladly travel within reason or arrange to meet students in a central location.

Thank you for reading, and please contact me if you have any questions or would like any further information.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Prealgebra

As a para professional and now special educator, I have spent five years supporting students in various levels of math including pre-Algebra through Algebra II and MCAS prep classes.

Social Studies

I graduated from UMass, Amherst with a 3.42 GPA as a History major. Additionally, I was a member of the national history honors society, Phi Alpha Theta. Professionally, I am certified in MA to teach history grades 5-12, and I received a passing score for Middle School Humanities on May 14th, 2011. As a paraprofessional for the last three years, I have worked supporting students and teachers during social studies lessons and with students' homework afterward.

Special Needs

I am certified in MA as a Teacher of Moderate Disabilities for grades 5-12.

My Master's Degree in Education with a Special Education concentration will be completed in 2013.

I am currently employed as an Academic Interventionist by the Springfield Public School system.
