About Mary

"I just want to make pretty things, even if no one else cares..."
The fashion industry can be a tough one to break into, but it doesn't have to be impossible. I am hoping to share my knowledge and experiences to help guide someone else to honing in on their skills. My tutoring focus would be in sewing and construction, however I am open to advising and answering questions about drawing, illustration, and portfolio building.

I learned how to sew when I was 12 and have been sewing and working in the fashion industry ever since. I started a small business on Ebay just for fun when I was in middle school to sell anything that I had sewn and created. In college I took on two internships. In the first, I was a design assistant to Season 8 Project Runway's Valerie Mayen. In my second internship I was a fashion stylist in the advertising department at BCBG headquarters. While in college, I also completed a study abroad program for fashion design in Paris at the Paris American Academy. After college my start in the industry was with Tween Brands. I started out as the technical design coordinator for Justice for girls and then moved on to become the assistant designer in lifestyles accessories. Currently, I am an assistant design and product manager out here in the Boston area.

I do not have tutoring experience specifically, however I was a mentor to a young girl for about 2 years through a program with Franklin County Children's Services from 2013-2015. I also have years of sewing and drawing experience both independently and professionally.

Please feel free to contact me here with any questions you may have or if you're ready to schedule a lesson! I look forward to meeting and speaking with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have taken drawing and fashion illustration specific courses throughout my 4 years in undergrad. Professionally I sell my own fashion illustrations online, as well as prepare CAD sketches daily in my full time job. Currently I still participate in figure drawing studio classes every so often to practice and improve my drawing skills.

Sewing

I have been sewing and designing garments and accessories since I was 12, so about 14 years. I have produced a full children's wear collection that was presented at Cleveland fashion week. I also have experience as a technical designer at tween brands where I focused on fit, construction and details of garment and accessory design.
