About Caitlin

Hello,

I am a Commonwealth and Departmental Honors graduate of Bridgewater State University with a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Writing concentration and in Communications with a concentration in Theater Arts. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.97 GPA in May 2016. I began tutoring through the National Honor Society while at Ursuline Academy high school.

While at Bridgewater State University, I worked as a peer assistant in college level English classes, helping students to improve their writing and study skills. I have also helped many friends and students of various ages ranging from first graders to adults with math, science, and English assignments as well as Bible studies, reading, Spanish, public speaking and SAT preparation, and will be teaching Sunday school, beginning in the fall. I have been an honor roll student since the beginning of middle school. I take pride in academic excellence and strive for understanding as well as high marks. I deeply value education in all subject areas, and I try to make subject material memorable and less daunting.

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. This is because I cannot fit in another student on such short notice, and I clear my schedule for these lessons. Also, I may not see a cancellation message in time. For late cancellations, I charge half of what would have been charged for the full lesson. If a student fails to notify me of a cancellation before the lesson, or before I have to leave to be at the proper location on time, I will charge for a full lesson.

In addition to traditional lessons, I am available for online lessons and for proofreading via email.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Math is very important for all students, though I know it is not everyone's favorite subjects. It certainly was never mine. However I have studied the Algebra I material multiple times between middle school and high school, and therefore know the subject matter very well. Algebra I is a foundation for various higher levels of math, and during those upper level courses I learned that mastering Algebra I was crucial to my success. It is important for the SATs as well, and a student who feels confident in his or her math skills will excel.

Bible Studies

I am a very religious Christian. I have been a teacher's aide in Sunday school at my Church, Secretary and Vice President of my church's youth group, and I was at the head of my Sunday school graduating class. I began a small branch of a religious organization on my college campus during my sophomore year and founded another during my senior year. I went to a religious Christian summer camp in Pennsylvania for eight years, during which we had daily Christian education lessons. I have studied for and participated in Bible Bowl competitions for years, and written two Oratorical essays using the Bible as a source; the first Oratorical competition I won at the regional level and was sent to compete nationally in Chicago, Illinois in 2011, the second Oratorical competition I won at the regional level again and competed in Houston, Texas in 2013. I attended Ursuline Academy, a parochial high school for girls, for four years, where religion was taught as a formal class daily. I am on the Religious Committee as well as the Executive Board at my church, and am teaching a class of Sunday school students beginning in September 2016.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored students of various ages in elementary school. I also have worked as a teacher's aide in Sunday school for Pre-K and grades 1, 2, 5, and 6, and a Sunday school teacher beginning in September 2016. During my senior year of high school, I volunteered in a fourth grade classroom for a month. While there, I taught the students long division and reading, among other subjects. During that time, I also spent a day helping in a first grade classroom and a day in a second grade classroom as well. I have helped with homework while working as a babysitter for many years, and I am around children often. I know how to break down information to make it more interesting, as well as easier to understand.

Elementary Math

Math is very important for all students, though I know it is not everyone's favorite subjects. It certainly was never mine. However I have successfully guided students through Elementary Math, including tutoring grades 1-6 and teaching a classroom of fourth graders how to do long division. Having a good foundation in Elementary Math will help children prepare for middle school and high school, as well as the SATs. A student who feels confident in his or her mathematical abilities will succeed on the SATs, and I inspire that confidence while helping my students build their skills.

English

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English at Bridgewater State University. The grades that I have received in all of my English courses there are either As or A-s. I assisted two professors in classes for a full semester for ENGL 203: Writing About Literature.

Geometry

Math is very important for all students, though I know it is not everyone's favorite subjects. It certainly was never mine. However Geometry is a foundation for Precalculus and various higher levels of math, and during those upper level courses I learned that mastering Geometry was crucial to my success. It is important for the SATs as well, and a student who feels confident in his or her math skills will excel.

Grammar

My major centered around grammar, and I know how important it is to use proper grammar in essays and on applications. Some people believe that good grammar means good thinking. While this is not true, using proper grammar can be the difference between getting the job and not getting the job, or an A as opposed to a B. Therefore it is important to know and be able to apply the rules of grammar.

Literature

I assisted two professors in classes for a full semester for ENGL 203: Writing About Literature.

Prealgebra

Math is very important for all students, though I know it is not everyone's favorite subjects. It certainly was never mine. However I have studied the Prealgebra material multiple times between middle school and high school, and therefore know the subject matter very well. Prealgebra is a foundation for Algebra I and various higher levels of math, and during those upper level courses I learned that mastering Prealgebra and Algebra I was crucial to my success. It is important for the SATs as well, and a student who feels confident in his or her math skills will excel.

Proofreading

I have peer edited many papers (and short stories) in my life, from strong writers and not so strong writers. Spelling and grammar can confuse readers, and Microsoft Word does not catch all of the mistakes. I have become skilled in proofreading and both interpreting and fixing very confusing spelling and grammar errors.

PSAT

The PSATs are practice for the SATs. This does not, however, mean that they should be taken lightly. They will inform a student about how prepared he or she really is for the SATs. I did very well on my PSATs and this was reflected in my SAT scores. My highest PSAT scores were Critical Reading: 68 Mathematics: 63 Writing Skills: 64.

Public Speaking

I graduated from Bridgewater State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a concentration in Theatre Arts. I took a public speaking course in 11th grade, then a communications course in 12th grade and another public speaking class my freshman year of college. Also, I have spoken in my church on behalf of my youth group, and prepared and delivered two Oratorical speeches, winning the Oratorical Competition regionally both times and competing nationally in Chicago in 2011 and in Houston in 2013. In addition, I have performed on stage countless times in plays and musicals, often needing to improvise, particularly in my school's original immersive production based on J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan." I have also presented work from my classes and my Honors Thesis at undergraduate research conferences at my university as well as the regional conference at University of Massachusetts Amherst. I have experience with public speaking in front of crowds of varied sizes, and have tutored public speaking through WyzAnt.

Reading

I chose English as my primary major because I have always loved reading, and English is a passion of mine.

SAT Math

The SATs are crucial for college acceptance. Math is very difficult for many students, myself included. However, my SAT Math score was a 650. I have tutored SAT Math before, and have tutored mathematics at various levels.

SAT Reading

The SATs are important for college acceptance, particularly in Writing, Mathematics and Critical Reading. My highest SAT Reading score was a 620. I have always been a strong reader, and much of my current college work involves critical reading and close reading, primarily because I am an English major but also because all subjects require strong reading skills. I can provide help with gleaning the important concepts from what is read in order to prepare for the Critical Reading SATs.

SAT Writing

I have tutored SAT Writing before with multiple students.

Spanish

Me encanta el español. Lo estudié durante seis años. He enseñado a los estudiantes del idioma también.
I love Spanish. I studied it for six years. I have taught students the language as well.

Vocabulary

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English at Bridgewater State University. I assisted two professors in classes for a full semester for ENGL 203: Writing About Literature and tutored in vocabulary through WyzAnt. Additionally, I completed my two-semester English thesis project. I chose English as my primary major because I have always loved reading and writing, and English is a passion of mine. It is true that reading improves our vocabulary, and consequently our writing.

Writing

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English at Bridgewater State University. I assisted two professors in classes for a full semester for ENGL 203: Writing About Literature. Additionally, I completed my two-semester English thesis project. Though writing essays comes naturally to me, I understand that it can be difficult for others, and in addition to the college courses, I have tutored essay writing before on middle school and high school levels.
