About Carmen

My goal as an educator is to instill a love of learning in my students, whether they end up loving the specific material I teach or biology or algebra or history; to know that I am supporting a fundamental appreciation for the omnipresence of 'educational opportunities' in our daily life drives me to create a curriculum that pushes students outside the four walls of their classroom, off the seat of their desk chair, and into a state of unquenchable curiosity. I have been teaching Spanish for 9 years in independent schools, and I know that I feel most confident and strong in my role as an educator when in fact I am actively participating in the learning process along with my students. When I hear and incorporate the constructive criticism, the impulsive but interesting project proposals, or the ambitious reading suggestions of my classes it is an empowering challenge that keeps me on my toes and continuously invested in collaboratively developing my curriculum with those it affects most directly--my students.

As a tutor, I bring this same intention and cooperative spirit to my work with individual students. Whether we are having relaxed conversation sessions, learning how to play a new game, or drilling discrete skills, I am acutely aware of the feedback and comfort level I am perceiving in a student. My goal is to balance guidance with flexibility as the student learns to direct their own process with new material and to appreciate and respond to their interests while still building and honing foundational skills.

I have a thorough, nuanced, personal relationship to the Spanish language and hispanic culture. Through years of study both in the US and abroad, conversations with family members and friends who live the language daily, and I am in constant pursuit to further broaden and clarify my understanding of both the mechanisms and the diverse context of this rich discipline. I have a Master's degree from Middlebury College's summer language institute, the pursuit of which included coursework in pedagogy and methodology of language teaching.

A voracious reader and a student of world literature, I have a passion for and an expertise in all the skills pursuant to the study of English. Through my training in grammar and foreign language education I have developed a quick and confident eye for identifying linguistic and content-related errors. I have extensive experience in preparing students to approach texts critically, with a variety of interpretative lenses.

As a high school teacher, I have my summers relatively free and am looking forward to spending some of that time supporting students in their academic endeavors beyond the classroom. If you are looking to brush up your Spanish conversational skills, tackle a major novel, prepare for exams, or maintain skills in a target area through the summer months I would be happy to hear from you!
