I was a software developer for 17 years before getting my M.A. in U.S. History and my M.A.T. in teaching Secondary History. I have a license to teach Social Studies and also Math in Massachusetts. I bring an unusual point of view towards History, as I am an experienced Revolutionary War reenactor. I am an excellent editor and writing coach.
History can be taught in terms of facts (the old boring names & dates so many people think of) or in terms of ideas and themes. Although you need to have some facts to build up the ideas and themes, I prefer to think about (and teach) history in terms of stories. What were people thinking? Why did they act the way they did? What happened as a result? This permits me to engage students more completely, which in turns helps them build a mental "framework" in which they can file the information.
I'm also a math nut. I think playing with math and numbers can be a great deal of fun. I want to relay that sense of fun to my students. Finding patterns, figuring things out for yourself, learning how things all fit together are all passions with me.
I have a lot of experience with people with ADD/ADHD. I have a good understanding of how ADD/ADHD students operate and can work with them to help make it less of a "disability".
Finally, I love writing and using words. I have enough experience as a writer in graduate school and as a teacher/grader of writing that I know I can help many students improve their academic prose. My own college age children swear that my help on a paper is worth at least one half a letter grade.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
