I am a former High School English and history teacher who stayed home to raise my children for the past 12 years. I have a B.A. in History from Colby College and a Masters degree in History with honors from the University of Connecticut and I completed my M.Ed. with honors in 2016. I have tutored students in S.A.T. and ACT prep, American, European and African history and have helped with English papers on Shakespeare, Steinbeck and other literature. Because I love history and English, I enjoy guiding students who are stuck on a project or need help understanding complicated subjects.
I was trained by and tutored for one of the top two national SAT prep companies and I use their very effective methods when tutoring. Many of my students scores increase by more than 150 points and I have helped many students move from mid-600 scores on the SAT verbal section to a perfect 800. I like to work with both parents and students to understand their goals and how hard they want me to push students ; I excel at gently pushing students to prepare as best they can and then helping them dial down any pre-test anxiety.
In academic subjects, I appreciate helping students see the big picture because it aids them in understanding the supporting details, language and facts and helps them construct their own mastery of the topic, whether it is Of Mice and Men or the nuances of colonialism.
My first task is always to take the measure of the student and to understand his or her learning style. One of the things I enjoy about tutoring is the ability to tailor learning to the individual and to shift gears if a particular method is no longer working. Often it is as simple as helping students organize their own thoughts, for example, by creating a character tree for a novel so they can easily re-orient themselves to characters as they re-appear throughout a book.
My main goal is to use my passion for my subject to help guide students to a thorough understanding of what they need to know and why it is important. I often use modern day parallels to help students understand history, or push them to wonder why a place as far away as China plays such an important role in our everyday life and the government of our country.
There is nothing more satisfying for me than taking a frustrated and discouraged student and showing him or her how to succeed. Nancy has met with my son a couple of times to help him synthesize material for APUSH. She is very knowledgeable about the materials and has made him feel more confident (and be more efficient) about his studying and more prepared for tests.
Nancy has been a gift. She has patience to work with my daughter on improving her writing skills. She comes to each lesson very well prepared, often times communicating directly with my daughter prior to their meeting, in order to make it more effective. I sometimes times hear them laughing about various novels and comparisons. She has been flexible and willing to work on projects outside of Honors English. Nancy has truly been a great addition to my daughter's English experience. We highly recommend Nancy!
Would definitely recommend Nancy. She grasps student's capability quickly and focus on teaching what's needed. Both student and parent are very pleased.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored many students on the ACT reading section and helped them raise their scores by 5-8 points. I help familiarize students with the types of questions on the ACT, how to eliminate wrong answers and how to successfully deal with the pressure of reading four passages and answering 40 questions in 35 minutes.
I have a master's degree in history and have taught U.S. history from pre-contact (1492) times to the present. I have taught A.P. I have prepared students for the SAT and PSAT for more than five years and most of my students see score increases of at least 50 points in reading and writing. I previously tutored students in SAT and PSAT prep for The Princeton Review.
