About Daniel

I first started tutoring English while I was a college student in NYC. I was working in a restaurant, and there were several employees from Central America. They wanted to improve their English skills, and we agreed to meet regularly. It was very satisfying to see my co-workers develop a better sense of the language of their new homeland. When I got out of college with a BA in English, and a minor in education, teaching high school English was an obvious choice. I worked for two years in a charter-type school right next to Chinatown, and taught summer school in Harlem in between. It was often challenging, and always very rewarding.

Moving to western MA meant working in a very different school system, but there were many advantages to teaching at the local high school. The facilities were modern and the materials were up-to-date. Students were well-prepared and had high expectations. I had talented and experienced co-workers, and many opportunities to reflect upon and improve my teaching. I also had opportunities to tutor both high school and college students in a variety of English-related subjects.

Right now, I'm appreciating the flexibility that working as a tutor affords me. I also enjoy the more focused interactions that can happen with smaller groups, or one-on-one. I'm currently doing ESL tutoring with a group of middle- and high-school students from China who are attending the Hartsbrook School, and with a Danish employee of LEGO Systems.

I've always felt that the best teachers and tutors have both a genuine love for their subject matter, and a gift for sharing and communicating that love to others. I've always loved reading, and I've learned to love writing. Years of teaching experience has allowed me time to work on how best to communicate these.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I graduated with a BA in English (Cum Laude) from Fordham University. I minored in Education. I've taught HS English for 10 years in NYC, Amherst and Northampton, MA.

ESL/ESOL

I've been teaching English to non-native speakers since I was a college student. I tutored kitchen workers from Central America at the restaurant where I was working. I hold a TESOL Certificate from the School of International Studies/International Language Institute in Northampton, MA. I've been working since Fall 2014 teaching ESL to Chinese students who attend the Hartsbrook School in Hadley, MA.

Proofreading

I've read and graded thousands of essays while teaching HS English.
