About Helene

I am sensitive to students and committed to their (academic, professional, linguistic) advancement. I enjoy teaching and empowering others in ways they never thought possible.

I have a Master of Professional Technical Writing from Northeastern University. Thirteen years in high tech gave me a sense accountability and pride in a job well done. I apply this sense of accountability to my teaching and ultimately to my students.

I present various writing principles required to meet industry standards. Students then apply these standards to assignments.

--20 years ESL experience in Greece and US (students, college bound pilots in training, business professionals) and Boston area colleges (Babson College, Tufts University)

-Technical Writing - 13 years as a technical and proposal writer.

-Accent Reduction Coach certified by the Institute of Language and Phonology.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a substitute teacher and last week taught the 5th grade. As a substitute the kids were given assignments, I helped them in Social Studies by learning how to research, searching the books Table of Contents or even the index to find the page with the actual answer to the given question. In addition, I handed out a practice page in 5th grade math, multiplication. I helped in response to the kids questions. Although I have just started the school feels I would be useful in high school.

English

I currently present ELA concepts a substitute for eight elementary schools in the south shore. Critical thinking skills are emphasized, which include forecasting, making inferences and identifying different genres.

Grammar

I have ten years teaching ESL to business professionals in Athens, Greece and Boston area colleges (Babson, Tufts University, Bunker Hill Community College) and ten years tutoring college bound students in grammar, speaking skills, and writing in the English language.

Greek

I have helped teaching Greek to kids (in Greece - when they relocated to Greece). I attended kindergarten and part of the first grade in a Greek school in Greece. I have lived there 15 years and can read and write (very elementary script).

Literature

I hold a bachelor's of arts with a major in English literature. This includes major American works of literature, and notable Latin American literary works as well. Research, analysis and written presentations of my findings were extensive.

Proofreading

I spent five years as a member of a proposal department performing all the roles and responsibilities of a company writing, editing, and production center. Proofreading was vigorously conducted before any document 'shipped out'.

Public Speaking

I taught ESL in Athens, Greece for seven years. I spent almost three of those years teaching at a private elementary School. For two years at an aeronautical preparatory language center (ERAU). Training included a general overview of aviation terminology as well as an overall history of aviation.

Once I moved to Boston I worked as an ESL instructor at the American Language Academy, at the Babson College campus. One summer at Tufts University I taught TOEFL preparation.

I worked as a technical writer for 14 years and had opportunities to present information at departmental meetings.

In addition, I received a certification in accent reduction. I teach people to speak in a manner that is clear and easily understood.

Reading

I currently provide reading support as a substitute to eight elementary schools. This includes class instruction and special education support. Critical thinking skills are applied to reading assignments. Subject understanding, retelling, and recall are some of the academic demands of students.

Speech

I am certified as an accent coach by the Institute of Language and Phonology (ILP).

I help people adjust their accents by analyzing their speech and identifying mispronunciation of their speech. The methodology is based on a structured and research driven technique based on principles of speech pathology and linguistics.

TOEFL

I have taught students preparing for the TOEFL at Tufts University summer English program.
In addition, I recently helped a Brazilian finance manager with Columbia University application requirements. Specifically, I would question a response if it did not provide information or have him reread instructions when he wrote in a manner that was prohibited.

Writing

I authored (documented with input from technical staff) numerous manuals in software (e.g. management metrics). The manual was used as a marketing tool when visiting prospects within the Department of Defense. It was called Management Information Tracking Tool. This was when ongoing assessments and metrics were not widely used.

Also performed a major 'developmental edit' for a company white paper on the subject of automatic fine alignment of an optical workstation.

This is an example of what a person can produce when they are in an environment that is fast paced and full of opportunity.
Hope to hear from you!

Great teacher!

Helene has been a wonderful and enthusiastic teacher. She has gone out of her way to get the proper materials for me, and has even offered extra moments of her time for questions and clarifications outside of our classes. She has been a pleasure to learn from, always excited, encouraging, and eager to teach. She understands that a language is not just words, but also culture. She effortlessly spr
