Working with children and their families is something that has been my passion during all of my adult life. I began my career as a pre-school teacher, progressed to a special education paraprofessional, and finally completed my degree in 2011 and became a licensed 1-6 classroom teacher in the state of Massachusetts. My diverse background in working with children of all ages and learning abilities has given me a unique advantage when working with students. I strive to see each student as an individual and work very hard to learn a student's learning style. Once I have found out how a student leans best I then accommodate my plans to the student's style.
I have worked in both a Special Education and Regular Education extended year programs. I have also provided MCAS support for students in a small group setting. These experiences have provided me with more experience in helping students in reaching their educational goals. I am also proud to say that the students who received the MCAS tutoring in my small groups showed an increase in their overall performance.
Beginning my career as a teacher later in life has also given me an advantage. Because my children are older, I am familiar with what the educational expectations are throughout all grade levels. I believe that I have a level of patience and insight that only life experience can provide.
I look forward to working closely with children and their families as a tutor. I believe that it is important to not only work with students but to include parents/guardians in the educational process. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
There are several factors that qualify me as a K-6th Elementary tutor. I am a licensed 1-6 teacher in MA. I have held my license since 1/2012. I have held the position as a classroom teacher in both second and third grade. I have also tutored students in a small group setting for both Math and ELA MCAS tutoring. I also have a working knowledge of the P.A.R.C.C test.
I am currently a second grade classroom teacher. I work with students on a daily basis to strengthen their phonics skills to help with reading fluency and comprehension. Having completed my undergraduate degree in Young Children's Studies with in the past three years has provided me with some of the most up to date teaching techniques.
