Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

As a reading teacher for the past 15 years, I have worked with students who are dyslexic. A combination of strategies that include visual aids, phonics and sound awareness, and tactile
letter formation all help to assist the reading process. Most importantly, working with sound segments and continual review are needed.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently hold three teaching certifications, including reading grades k through 12, elementary education, and middle school certification. In addition, I hold two masters degrees, one in reading and one in curriculum and instruction. For the past 12 years I have worked as a reading specialist in a public school setting as well as worked as a tutor for local school districts and privately. My primary focus is decoding, comprehension and written language skills utilizing Fountas & Pinnell benchmark assessments.

English

As a private tutor and reading teacher, I have taught English for several years. Using expand a sentence for emerging learners, they learn to expand ideas by answering who, what, where, questions. In addition they learn how to combine ideas into one sentence, and expand by using descriptive vocabulary.

Paragraph development is done by direct modeling using chart paper to demonstrate an interesting introduction and then brainstorming ideas for each paragraph. Reinforcement of grammar, vocabulary, and content is included. Finally reading skills such as inferencing and author's purpose help build comprehension skills.

Phonics

I have taught kindergarten reading groups for the past several years in the Billerica Public School district. The skills taught include letter recognition, sound recognition, segmentation, blending, phonics rules. My resources included leveled readers and offered consistent daily running records and sight word reinforcement.

Reading

As a reading teacher with two masters degrees it is critical to model the "thinking process" out loud for students to see and hear. This modeling shows them how to analyze vocabulary and comprehension while reading. It teaches a reader to think about what sounds right, what looks right, and what makes sense.

Social Studies

Teaching social studies can bring foreign countries and cultures into our lives. Learning how and why events happened can help us make better decisions about our lives today and in the future.

As a certified social studies teacher in middle school, I taught American history and events that impacted our lives today such as the Boston Tea party, the gold strike, building the railroads, etc. which show why people relocated and how they lived. Using relevant examples teens can
See the correlation between past and present in such issues as segregation, border patrols, currency destabilization happening in the world today.

Being a world traveler I had the opportunity to bring back artifacts that help students understand how people lived and what was important in their lives then and now. These artifacts bring lively discussions of people and cultures of the past and present.

Writing

Writing offers an opportunity to express oneself. The most critical components include organization of ideas, clarity, and the use of grammar and vocabulary. As a teacher of writing I adhere chart paper on the walls and explain and model how to create ideas using paragraphs. The second step is to expand and clarify ideas within each paragraph. Finally students are taught how to edit and improve clarity. Final drafts are also proofread one more time.
