My approach to teaching has always been one of a relaxed, yet structured environment. I've always used humor in the class so everyone is relaxed and, therefore, open to learning and I teach to all kinds of learners: those who do best by seeing things again and again, by hearing things repeated, by doing rather than hearing, and by saying things outloud again and again. We do whatever it takes to make learning less challenging so we are successful together. So many of my students have been what some call "difficult" students; I call them a pleasure since I have always been successful teaching children on IEP's, those who have ADHD, Down's Syndrome, Autism, ADD, and behavior or emotional concerns. I really think it is with us building a relationship of comfort and trust that learning happens most easily. My teaching certification is for grades 1-6 in Elementary Education, though I am extremely comfortable tutoring middle school students as well. I have spent much of my time teaching every subject and also enjoyed when I taught only science and/or math to sixth graders on a rotating team. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
