About Sarah

I have a degree in Music Education (Instrumental Emphasis) and a minor in Computer Science Teaching. My primary instrument is oboe, but I am proficient in all of the band and orchestra instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, tuba, baritone/euphonium, violin, viola, cello, bass, snare drum, keyboard percussion). My undergraduate degree taught me not only how to play these instruments proficiently, but how to teach them (mostly for beginners--except oboe). Since I'm am oboist, I can make reeds and teach reed making as well.

I'm also a confident programming teacher, primarily in Java. Starting my second semester of my undergraduate degree, I worked as a teaching assistant for the introduction to computer science class, which taught Java. I have 3-4 years experience teaching beginning programmers in Java and am therefore very familiar with the common mistakes and misunderstandings of beginning programmers. In addition to Java, I also have experience programming in C, C++, PHP, and some other languages. I can teach the beginnings of web programming as well using HTML, CSS, PHP, and mySQL.

I'm a trained teacher with a wide range of skills in music and programming. I'm willing to work with anyone who puts in the effort, regardless of his/her abilities.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C++

The first language I learned in high school was C++, and two of the classes I took for my Computer Science Teaching minor included programming in C++.

Computer Science

I have a Computer Science Teaching minor and was a teaching assistant for the introduction to computer science class (and the data structures class for a couple semesters) for most of my undergraduate degree. In addition to AP Computer Science 1, 2, and 3 in high school, in college I took Introduction to Computer Science (Java), Data Structures and Algorithms (Java), Introduction to Computer Systems (Assembly, C), Discrete Structures (Java), Advanced Programming Concepts (C++), and Internet Programming (C++, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, HTML, Perl, PHP).

Ear Training

For my music education degree I was required to complete four dictation classes and four sight singing classes. I believe sight singing helped in being able to dictate and listen critically.

General Music

I have a degree in music education which included classes that taught general music methods. I'm prepared and qualified to teach general music in the public school, and am more than willing to teach it individually as well.

HTML

Most of my HTML knowledge is self taught from creating my own websites. I have a personal website and have created four other websites for various small businesses. I took a web programming class for my computer science minor which taught some HTML as well.

Java

I was a teaching assistant for the Introduction to Computer Science class for about 4 years during my undergrad, and the class taught Java. Two additional classes I took for my Computer Science Teaching minor were also programming in Java. I feel most fluent programming in Java than any other programming language.

Music Theory

For my music education degree I was required to complete four music theory classes in addition to a class on form and analysis. I've used this knowledge to compose some of my own pieces and to enhance my performance skills.

Oboe

I have a degree in Music Education and oboe is my primary instrument that I've been playing since 6th grade. It was the instrument I auditioned on to get into the BYU school of music. In addition to the 6 years of lessons before college, I took 3 years of oboe lessons with the oboe professor and gave a recital.

Patient and well versed — Sarah was very patient during our inevitable technical difficulties for our first session (They were on my end). I needed help with a particular Java coding assignment and we went over some theory first before we moved on to the actual assignment using screen share. Already scheduled the second meeting- highly recommend. ...
