I hold Massachusetts Department of Education certification in Spanish and I have been a public school teacher for 12 years. I received my Bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston, majoring in Russian with a minor in History. I am currently in a Master of Education program, specializing in Curriculum & Instruction. I taught middle school French and Spanish for 10 years and I currently teach high school Spanish. I have taught high school Russian and I have been an MCAS tutor for both English Language Arts and Math. I was also a volunteer teacher of English as a Second Language for adults, and I worked as a teaching assistant in an elementary bilingual program (English and Spanish).
As a public school teacher, I understand the foreign language curriculum and what you need to be successful in class. I also know how to break it down, make it easy to understand and fun to learn. When I work with a student one on one, great things can be accomplished in a short time. You will have a teacher who knows the curriculum, but have my enthusiastic and undivided attention. I enjoy tutoring and have tutored Spanish, French, Russian, writing and math. I look forward to working with you helping you succeed! Barbara has been tutoring me in French, Spanish, and soon Russian. She brings a technical and professional teaching background to the lessons by providing complete, simple and educated help. She's genuine, personable, accommodating, and very encouraging. She's prepared, listens well, and treats each lesson as a well-defined time of learning that isn't rushed or treated lightly. You feel as though your time was valuable to her and step away certain that you have learned a new phrase, word, or grammar rule.
Excellent tutor! My son is in 8th grade, 2nd year French. He was struggling to keep up. After only the first session with Barbara, he said he felt more confident. He had a D on his report card before Barbara started tutoring him and after one month his progress report shows a B! Barbara is patient and very good at diagnosing where my son needs help. We plan to use Barbara throughout high school as well.
Barbara has motivated my not so motivated Spanish student. I would highly recommend her services, she is patient prompt and has been very accommodating with her schedule. She was able to evaluate my students strengths and weaknesses and focus on the positive.
Barbara just started tutoring my son in Spanish. In the short time that we have known her, she has been very friendly and professional. She has really taken the time to get to know my son and his needs. She has been extremely organized and has always come prepared with lessons for my son that are engaging and interesting. Best of all he looks forward to his lesson. Barbara is an excellent tutor and I would highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I majored in Russian at the University of Massachusetts at Boston, graduating in 1992. I received the "Distinction in Russian" award for having the highest GPA in my major. I can submit transcripts to verify this information.
