About Karen

My name is Karen. I have been working with students with autism spectrum disorders and other special needs for 25 years. I am a full-time teacher in a public school looking for part-time hours after school some days of the week. I have extensive experience in working with families and students in their home. I have worked in the past as a school director and consultant but left those positions because I missed working directly with students. My teaching philosophy is "teaching the way a student can learn" and will try just about anything out there to help a student learn! I am firmly rooted in sound, research-based practices with the real world experience to know that the data may not tell the entire story. If it works, it works. My name is Karen. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am a Massachusetts certified special education teacher. I have been working with students with an autism spectrum disorder my entire career. I have 15 graduate credits in Applied Behavior Analysis, a widely used methodology in teaching students with autism. I have direct experience with this method having used it in my classroom and with my students for years.

Phonics

I am a Massachusetts certified special educator for the last 25 years. I have extensive experience teaching phonemic awareness and beginning readers. I have experience and training in FunDations by Wilson and many other programs and strategies for teaching students to read and increase their phonetic awareness and fluency.
