I am a former teacher of French and the co-head of the Foreign Language Department at an independent school, having worked primarily with grades 4-8. I am experienced in creating and implementing both French and Spanish curricula. Additionally, I have provided French tutoring services for the past three years. After working for a brief period of time in a residential setting, I have experience working in all subject areas for ages 12-18; however, I am most proficient and comfortable with the humanities. I am currently a full-time student in a Clinical PsyD Doctorate program. My approach to tutoring is to identify the area of desired improvement, whether it is homework completion, test prep, content comprehension or application, and to work with the student to identify techniques to help strengthen his or her understanding and application of the material. I see the tutor and the student as a team working together toward success and continuing growth. Throughout this process, I try to make practice exercises meaningful and fun; after all, learning is one of life's greatest adventures! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a French teacher at Derby Academy from Jan., 2008 through June, 2013. I also served as the co-head of the Foreign Language Department. While teaching, I was a member of the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association (MaFLA) and the American Association of French Teachers (AATF). Prior to a career in teaching, I majored in Political Science and French from Amherst College, writing an honors thesis about French nationalism and the role of the intellectual in moments of crises of national identity (2007).
