I am an experienced tutor who also teaches at the college level. I have taught in multiple science lectures including physics, chemistry and biology. I have tutored in all 3 subjects as well. I have a high level of success, and my students are grateful for the improvement they see in their retention as well as their grade.
I have had success in tutoring numerous students as well as teaching students both at the community college and university level. I have tutored multiple high school students with marked improvements on grades in physics and biology especially. I am currently instructing in biology at the community college that I work at and once the exercise science department grows will be expanding into that field as well.
My background is in biology and kinesiology, but I also have a large involvement in medicine as a 911 EMT. Doing work in the hospital setting allows for me to understand a lot of the clinical basis in the science I teach. I am an experienced tutor who also teaches at the college level. I have had
Derek is a great tutor who helped me daughter with cell biology at UCONN. My teacher would give hundreds of slides with a lot of information on them and Derek was able to break them down into a simpler explanation and tell which important parts I really needed to know. He also helped me with the practice exams for the course and helped me develop a strategy when taking the exam! I would highly recommend him for anybody having a hard time with a biology related class!
Derek was patient and kind. He gave my son explicit instruction and my son felt good about the future of this particular class for the first time all year!!
Derek was patient and made my daughter very comfortable. They covered a lot of ground and she felt it was a very good lesson.
Derek came for the second time to our house to help my son with chemistry in his junior year. We did not have much time to go through all topics and homework, because my son had a school event. In this lesson they were able to accomplish the whole weeks homework and Derek explained the topic so well that my son understood all and feels well prepared. I was impressed by the speed and great explanation of Derek to get my son up to the knowledge to be feel confident for this weeks work.
Chemistry and Anatomy have been difficult obstacles for many students to hurdle. Any student struggling with Chemistry or Anatomy would be doing themselves a disservice by not employing Derek F. as their tutor. He is extremely knowledgeable about the subjects, patient, flexible and a good communicator. In addition, he is able to pick out important concepts from text books and present them to students in a comprehensive manner. When I first began working with Derek, Chemistry was my biggest concern, I did not have the textbook that I would be using for school, nor did I have a syllabus, as we began working in the summer. I also did not even know where to begin using the textbooks that I had. However, Derek stepped right up to the plate and guided me through the important information and picked out problems that would be important for me to know. In addition, when working on Anatomy he approached it in a systematic manner. That is to say that we first learned the bones, then the bony markings so that I would know where the muscles originated and inserted. I would highly recommend Derek to anyone who is seeking to improve themselves in fields of Anatomy, Chemistry, or Physics. Derek also has expertise in Physics and I plan on working with him on this summer as I will be taking Physics next semester.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
