About Brian

I am often described as a patient and a good teacher. I take an intuitive approach to learning with an emphasis on analysis and breaking down complex problems into component parts.

I have taught physics for several years at the high school level in academically rigorous programs. I have also taught chemistry. I have a wide range of general knowledge, and my academic interests include all physical sciences, mathematics, economics, logic, and philosophy.

In tutoring, I can structure a lesson in any number of ways depending on the needs of the student. If you have lots of questions, great. However, if you are so lost that you don't even know what questions to ask, that is fine too. We can start by identifying whatever skills or knowledge you are missing and go from there. Often in physics, I find that students' difficulties originate in problems with notation or knowledge rather than something more fundamental.

I'm pretty lighthearted and easy to approach. I am always happy to talk about physics or math, so message me if you'd like to do so.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

In tutoring calculus, I emphasize the interplay between intuition and mathematics and the importance of both. I guide students through problems using an approach that is highly analytical, focusing closely on the purpose and meaning of each mathematical step and consistent notation to avoid confusion and trivial computational errors. In a typical tutoring session, a student learns the intuition behind a concept and how it can be applied to real problems.

Chemistry

I have taught chemistry at the high school level and am experienced in designing lesson plans for a wide variety of learning styles.

In tutoring chemistry, I emphasize the fundamentals of the science and understanding terminology and nomenclature. Success in a chemistry class depends heavily on mathematical and terminological conventions, and these must be mastered by any student wishing to excel in the subject.

GED

I have tutored students studying and preparing for their GED. I have experience teaching in the classroom in public and private schools as well as tutoring in after-school enrichment programs for students in need of academic support.

Physics

I have taught physics at the high school level for four years in academically rigorous curricula. I am experienced in designing lesson plans for a wide variety of learning styles. In tutoring physics, I emphasize the fundamentals of the science and understanding notation and sign conventions, as many errors result from inconsistencies in these errors. I also emphasize an intuitive understanding of each equation, the meanings of each variable, and the set of assumptions each equation makes before applying concepts to real problems.
