About Nicolas

I completed my high school education at Walter Payton College Prep and am attending Harvard this fall. I have always had a passion in both learning and working with others. I have never been afraid of asking others for help on homework or classwork and have been eager to help classmates seeking help.

I first got exposure to tutoring as a volunteer in the LIT program, a program designed to help under-privileged kids catch up in reading and writing. On top of being a part-time tutor, I have experience helping kids working as a camp counselor at Fred's Camp and Camp Chicago as well as taking on babysitting jobs around my neighborhood.

In my experience as a tutor, the most important thing I realized was that there isn't a cookie cutter way of teaching any subject to any student. Each student is different, and I pay attention to their learning style and adjust accordingly. I strive to not only make sure students can solve each problem, but that they thoroughly comprehend the concept as well. After finding the weak points in their understanding, I introduce problems and ask questions that specifically target those areas.

Look forward to meeting you and working with you to reach your academic goals.

Best,

Nicolas

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I speak Chinese fluently, and have been immersed in the language since I was born. I received a score of 281 on the HSK 4, a test designed for learners who can discuss a relatively wide range of topics in Chinese and are capable of communicating with Chinese speakers at a high standard. I go to Chinese school on Saturdays as well as studied abroad in China my freshman year of high school.

Geometry

I took geometry as an 8th grader. I was part of the math team during high school, and sophomore year the topic of all contests were geometry. The geometry questions tested on the math contests demanded a much higher understanding than most if not all high school geometry classes.

Piano

I have played Piano since I was 6. I was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall last year. I won the American International Protege Competition as well as was a guest performer with the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra. I have helped some of my classmates learn basic chords and songs on the piano.

Violin

I have played violin since I was 9. I was the Concertmaster of Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) Accelerando Strings, and the Concertmaster of CYSO Preparatory Strings. I was the Concertmaster and Founder of the Chamber Orchestra at my high school for junior and senior year.
