About Barbara

I worked as a professional writer for many years. I was a staff writer at TIME magazine between 2003 and 2010, and I have written freelance articles for many other publications as well. While at TIME, I also did some editing, which taught me how to work with other people to make their writing better. In 2010, I returned to graduate school. I am currently earning a PhD at Harvard in Sociology and Social Policy. As a graduate student, I have honed my understanding of how to write for an academic audience.

Writing is difficult-- even with a lot of experience-- and I appreciate that. My goal as a proofreader is to make sure that what the writer is trying to say comes through clearly. I work hard to make sure that spelling, grammar and punctuation are correct, but I also care deeply about making a piece of writing as strong and clear as possible.

I worked as a professional journalist, including at TIME magazine, for nearly 10 years, and I hold a bachelor's degree in the Writing Seminars from Johns Hopkins University. I am currently a PhD student at Harvard University. I have experience helping people in a variety of environments-- both professional and academic-- make their writing better.

Thank you for your interest in my proofreading services, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
