About Louis

I have always enjoyed teaching it was my first job in undergrad and it is why I am pursuing a graduate degree. I have had over 5 years of tutoring experience in physics and math including working with students with learning disabilities. I have a BS in physics from the University of Rochester as well as an AM in Physics from Harvard University. In addition I have taken taken teaching courses at both universities. I specialize in college level general education courses but I have experience tutoring high school students and adult continuing education students. I have found that my first session with students is most productive if we work through a homework provided in class so I can identify what areas or concepts the student is having difficulty with. After the first lesson I can design practice problems that reinforce concepts the student is trying to learn. I have found that different approaches are necessary for different students, while some students prefer a formulaic approach to problem solving others benefit more from review of core concepts.

One of my major goals while tutoring a student is to build up their confidence in the material. I have found that physics and math have a reputation for being especially difficult and this reputation makes some students doubt their abilities even if they understand the material. Depending on the student I can provide additional practice problems and work to complete. I offer in person as well as online tutoring. However, if schedules permit I recommend face to face lessons as they tend to be more productive.

I have completed college level courses and have experience tutoring in: Algebra, Calculus, Multi-Variable Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Classical Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Quantum Mechanics, Physical Science, and Chemistry. If you think you would enjoy my tutoring style and do not see your subject listed please don't hesitate to contact me. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I have tutored calculus (1,2, and 3) for 4 years. I have also tutored and taught first/second year college level physics courses which require calculus. I use calculus on a day to day basis as a graduate student.

Differential Equations

I have taken a college level Differential Equations class and passed with an A. I have 2 years previous tutoring experience specific to Differential Equations.

Linear Algebra

I have taken two college level classes specific to linear algebra receiving A grades. I have 3 years previous tutoring experience specific to Linear Algebra. I use linear algebra on a consistent basis as part of my ongoing education. I have found that showing work and working meticulously helps students who struggle with this subject.

MATLAB

I am a graduate student who uses Matlab on a daily basis. I have written all of my data acquisition and analysis scripts. I have also written a Monte-Carlo simulation for use in my research.

Supportive and Helpful

Louis has really helped me target areas of my weaknesses that other courses and self-help content has not. I had an excellent first lesson, during which we covered a lot. I like Louis's approach to teaching. Really feeling much more confident after working with Louis. Also it is good to know that he can help not only with Maths but also with Physics.
