---
I am a physician, social scientist, and philosopher. I am a researcher at the Program in Psychiatry and the Law at Harvard Medical School, and Co-Director of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, American Unit. Previously, I was an Instructor and Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University.
My research investigates empirical as well as normative questions at the intersections of psychology, medicine, law, ethics, and religion. In 2012, his research and ideas were the subject of a profile in the Boston Globe.

I am interested in all aspects of the intersection of sciences and the humanities. I graduated from Brown University (3.97 GPA; magna cum laude; Phi Beta Kappa; Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honors Society) with a BS in neuroscience and a BA in religious studies (with honors), as well as a PhD in cognition and culture. I received the James Manning Medal and Harvey A. Baker Award (given to 5 graduating students for academic excellence), was selected to the All-USA College Academic Team [honorable mention], was awarded a Tylenol Scholarship [given to 40 graduate students in the United States], the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship [awarded in 2004 to 39 college graduates in the United States out of 1,226 nominees], and a Leadership and Service Award from Big Brothers of America.

I also graduated from Harvard Divinity School with an MTS in Philosophy of Religion, and from Harvard Medical School with an MD (with honors) with scholarly concentrations in Medical Ethics. At Harvard Medical School, I was also a member of the Oliver Wendell Holmes Society, received the Michael Crichton Fellowship in Medical Anthropology from the Department of Social Medicine, the Louis E. Kirstein Research Fellowship from the Division of Medical Ethics, the Donald J. Cohen Fellowship in Child Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Richard C. Cabot Prize in the History of Medicine.

At Harvard and Brown, I taught in the Departments of Biology, Neuroscience, Psychology, Political Science, and Religion, and has received a number of awards for his teaching and mentoring, including receiving a Certificate of Distinction in Teaching from the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning at Harvard University five times.

My research has been supported by the Nancy Lurie Marks Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Fogarty International Center, the Harvard Pluralism Project, the Harvard Mind/Brain/Behavior Interfaculty Initiative, and the Center for Anthropology and Mind at Oxford University.

I have co-authored and co-edited two books published by UNESCO (Psychiatric Ethics and the Rights of Persons with Mental Disabilities in Institutions and the Community; The Ethics of Pharmaceutical Industry Influence in Medicine), and have written over a dozen scholarly research articles in the humanities and sciences, as well as popular articles, such as for Scientific American, Wired Magazine, and The New Republic. I has was selected to participate in the Aspen Institute Health Forum and the Yale Global Leaders Summit.

My research and ideas have been covered by the Atlantic Monthly, BBC, Boston Globe, Businessweek, Forbes, Harvard Magazine, Los Angeles Times, NPR, Psychology Today, and Washington Post, among others.
