Goddard College, Plainfield, VT (Bachelor's)
Boston University (Master's)
I specialize in tutoring English. For over ten years now, I've been working one-on-one with readers and writers from beginners to professionals and from second-language learners to advanced-placement students. With my breadth of experience, I know how to help students improve their skills to reach a new level of confidence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
I took my Bachelor of Arts from Goddard College and then worked my way through graduate school to earn my Master of Science degree in Communications from Boston University. I spent three highly successful decades as a science and technology writer interpreting this kind of material for general audiences. I also earned awards from the Society for Technical Communication for my editorial work with professional writers. My last position in publishing was Director of New Media Projects for Oxford University Press in New York. I still do editorial and web work for a few long-time clients.
But as fulfilling as this work still was, I had already found a new love in teaching. I left publishing and by 2002 had earned my teaching certification and licensure in English and in Biology for Grades 5-12. I was awarded a $20,000 scholarship for my certification. I taught English as a Second Language to students in a Red Cross "survival skills" ESL program, working with large and small groups from beginner to advanced intermediate level. I taught ESL Writing for international students at Mount Ida College. I provided skills tutoring and homework help for students with learning disabilities at the middle-school level in the Fitchburg, MA, public school system. The following fall, I was hired by the same school as an 8th-grade classroom teacher in General Science. During this time, I also tutored middle-school, high-school, and college students who needed help with English, ESL, Writing, and the critical skills of reading comprehension and analysis. I teach music to adults for the fun of it.
Some of these teaching environments have really stretched my creativity and training and as a result I have had to become an imaginative, adaptable, and, most of all, patient teacher.
I see myself as a "professional explainer" - my greatest skill may be my ability to find a way to help people understand just about anything. But my approach is not only to help students understand the material in front of them, but also to build the student's academic "muscles." Everyone is curious. If we can spark that curiosity, students can actually enjoy learning, no matter the subject. My goal remains to equip the student with the intellectual and analytical tools as well as the reading and writing skills that will bring success in school, now.
I try to limit the number of students I work with at any given time because each student deserves individual planning and attention, and my work is tailored to each student's individual needs. I also try to be available to my students for quick emails or chat outside of regular tutoring sessions. I will request regular meetings with you, the parent, to discuss your child’s work and mine. I require a 24-hour cancellation notice, but am always willing to do make-up or extra sessions as needed.
Please drop me a line to discuss your situation. I hope you will consider the advantages of working with a professional English tutor whose style and technique was developed in practice, not just in theory. I look forward to meeting you and coming up with a plan for success in English. I specialize in tutoring English. Lilian was a great teacher. I learned so many things. I liked this lesson that I took with her. She helped me to improve my writing skills.
Thank you so much for your kind comments. I appreciate the feedback. I hope all went well with your presentation and your paper.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My approach to tutoring English combines hands-on, face-to-face remedial work with the development of proper style, grammar, and vocabulary. I go a step further to emphasize critical thinking skills required to better comprehend written and spoken material and to organize and present one's own thoughts. Our goal is to increase classroom confidence and performance by working not only with language skills but also by nurturing students' natural curiosity and desire express themselves.
My approach to ESL emphasizes immersion in English as it is actually spoken and written in the US. My naturalistic methods use context, visual aids, and non-verbal skills to help students to understand spoken and written English and to be understood themselves when speaking and writing in English. We work together to develop practical English skills quickly, while addressing any immediate language problems.
My background includes working with recent immigrants who require basic "survival" English. I've worked with high-school and college students and with advanced students who need to use specialized English vocabulary and style guidelines. I have taught and tutored in the public schools. I've been tutoring and teaching ESL since 2001, and I know what works!
If you are having difficulty with English grammar or other English language skills, I can help. My approach to tutoring English grammar combines hands-on corrective work in grammar with simple explanations of the rules behind proper grammar. My students understand why we do things a certain way so that they can move ahead with confidence.
I first began proofreading and copy-editing while I was earning my Master of Science in Communications at Boston University. Over the years, I have worked with all kinds of print and online content from college essays and computer software manuals to engineering and technology, science, law, and the arts. I have worked with high-school and college students, academics and scientists, and with professional writers. I have held editorial positions at Morgan-Grampian, Miller Freeman and Oxford University Press.
As a professional writer and editor as well as a teacher, my reading comprehension has to be quick and accurate. There are skills involved in reading at higher levels that can be taught. I have been teaching those skills all my professional life to students ranging from a beginner class in survival English, to students entering college, to professionals in a variety of fields.
My approach to tutoring reading combines daily reading with discussion of style, grammar, and vocabulary. I also emphasize the tools needed for critical thinking in comprehending new material. I believe that students who can criticize written material are students who understand that material.
I have 15 years experience in tutoring and teaching ESL/EFL students. My background includes helping students prepare for the TOEFL. I understand the requirements of the TOEFL and how to teach the skills that help students improve their score. Over the years, I've worked with English language learners from complete beginners to advanced students covering all the skills from understanding spoken and written English to speaking and writing with confidence.
I am an English language specialist. My approach to building English vocabulary is goal-based and involves selected readings, visual aids, and specialized vocabulary as needed. I started out teaching English to recent immigrants in a Red Cross ESL program for "survival" English in 2001. I went on to get my certification in English and teach in the public schools. I've worked successfully with all levels of English students from beginners to professional writers.
As a professional writer and editor, my English skills are top-notch. I have also been tutoring writing skills with high-school and college students, with academics and scientists, and with professional writers for almost 15 years. I earned my license and certification to teach English in 2002. I went on to teach in the public school system, where I also tutored students with learning disabilities in reading, writing, and organizational skills.
