About Michael

In my 7 years of experience, I have learned how to best solve chemistry problems and clearly explain these methods to my students. This includes strategies for solving specific problem types, general concepts, and critical reasoning skills. I offer these insights, including all my hard earned tips and tricks, to my students. After a few sessions you may begin thinking like a chemist.

I have seen it all in terms of university general and organic chemistry curriculums. From my academic experience at Cornell, work in various research institutions, and vast tutoring experience, I have seen just about all question types and variations of these problems.

I am extremely familiar helping students adapt to challenging university chemistry environments, as well as AP and high school chemistry!

In 2015-16, I tutored the entire general chemistry curriculum at Boston University, and am extremely familiar with the specific problem sets and exam-type questions.

Chemistry is best understood when first broken down into simple concepts. Once these fundamentals are mastered, students begin to see complicated problems as larger sequences of fundamental concepts, linked by some creative thinking. My approach is to ensure students first master the fundamentals. Then, I guide students through the more complex problems often found on exams, clearly explaining any new concepts or strategy, resolving any difficulties along the way, but allow YOU to discover the answer. This way that “Ahah!” moment of problem solving is yours, and you will be able to solve problems independently.

The ultimate goal of my tutoring is for you to gain flexibility in subject material, so you can apply concepts learned to new problems. To facilitate this, I often make variations of questions already completed, requiring a slightly different approach or the addition of another concept from class.

I have become quite experienced at gauging professors’ question styles, and use that to design practice problems similar to the ones on your exam.

I have also conducted organic chemistry research at Cornell, The Scripps Research Institute, and Stockholm University. At Scripps, I worked with a team of professionals on the development of new breast cancer therapeutics.

As a tutor I strive to provide you the best learning experience possible.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have experience privately tutoring high school math, and a wealth of other tutoring experiences in Chemistry. This experiences were especially focused on developing better test taking and time management skills.

I recently scored a 167/170 (94th Percentile) on the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE. The Chemistry, Physics, Statistics and Math classes I completed at Cornell required an in-depth knowledge of algebra and relationships between variables.

My education is a B.A. in Chemistry & Chemical Biology, Magna Cum Laude, from Cornell University.

Chemistry

Hi, I'm Mike. In 2014, I graduated from Cornell University in Chemistry & Chemical Biology, Magna Cum Laude. I am extremely experienced with chemistry at the university and high school level, and have tutored at Cornell, Harvard, Boston University, Northeastern and Lexington High School. The courses I tutor are university general & organic chemistry, AP, IB and HS chemistry. I enjoy teaching chemistry, and helping my students succeed and exceed their expectations.

Organic Chemistry

At Cornell, I tutored organic chemistry for two years with the Learning Strategies Center. I received an "A+" in both the orgo lecture and honors lab courses, and an "A" in the graduate level organic synthesis course. My research experience includes working with organic synthesis groups at Cornell, The Scripps Research Institute & Stockholm University. At Scripps, I worked with a team of professionals on the synthesis of the taxane family of molecules to develop new breast cancer therapeutics.
