About Thomas

A B.S. in materials science from MIT, graduate electrochemistry research at Boston University, and international consulting (certified E.I.T.) put me in a unique position to teach physics and chemistry for a student of any skill level. I don't intend to just show my students material, I intend to teach them the fundamentals of the lesson and how to study on their own. As a result, they gain a fuller understanding of the material at hand while learning how to study on their own.

I've been tutoring for over seven years now, helping high school, college, graduate, and non-traditional students in everything from passing tests, to SAT/ACT prep, to passing graduate qualifier exams. I also have experience tutoring students with developmental disabilities, particularly ADD and ADHD.

I started by tutoring high school students in AP calculus and biology. After entering college at MIT, I was a teaching assistant for three years in the physics department, specializing in electricity and magnetism. In addition, I was an aid in developing course material for Newtonian Physics and Solid State Chemistry. I also spent time in Italy in an educational program that sought to teach physics, thermodynamics, and calculus at the high school level.

As a graduate student in electrochemistry, I get to apply abstract physical and chemical concepts with high level mathematics into practical problems. In my spare time, I help students by tutoring in the subjects of thermodynamics and quantum mechanics.

If you have questions or are wanted to learn more about a certain subject, let me know. We can arrange a time and meeting place to push you to the next level.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have been tutoring in the field of general chemistry for about 7 years now, starting in high school at the AP level. During my time at MIT, I tutored students in the fields of aqueous and solid state chemistry. Currently, I am a PhD student in electrochemistry and a freelance engineering consultant which gives me a unique perspective on how to teach chemistry in a practical manner.

Mechanical Engineering

I graduated from MIT with a degree in Materials Science and Engineering. In my spare time, I consult for companies and individuals, doing design analysis and manufacturing processes. I work in a machine shop helping analyze structural models for steel and composite car chassis. As of last year, I'm certified as an E.I.T. by the state of Massachusetts.

Physics

I have been tutoring in the field of physics for about 4 years now. During my time at MIT, I was a teaching assistant for physics classes for 3 years and privately tutored students for 2. I also spent time helping refine physics curriculum for online EdX classes. Through an MIT educational development program, I taught physics in Italian high schools. Currently, I am a PhD student in electrochemistry and a freelance engineering consultant which gives me a unique perspective on how to teach physics in a practical manner.
