I am an enthusiastic, warm and approachable tutor who can be patient and understanding without compromising the standards to which I hold my students. I have taught courses and seminars (including an exclusive writing seminar) at Brandeis University and also served as an English as a Second Language Tutor and a teaching and course assistant for almost a dozen anthropology courses. I have been a Writing Consultant at the Brandeis University Writing Center for four years and have a PhD in anthropology from the same university. I thrive on one-on-one interactions with students, especially from diverse cultural backgrounds. I have assisted both undergraduate and graduate students from varied disciplines and continue to do so. I welcome the challenge of thinking through an assignment from the initial stage of brainstorming to the final revisions of an essay. I especially enjoy the process of assisting students as they strive to form their thoughts and articulate them in clear, coherent, well organized prose.
One of my most rewarding experiences as a teacher was with a student who genuinely struggled in one of my classes. Towards the end of the semester she was overwhelmed with assignments and felt she would not be able to hand in her final assignment in time. She was worried she would fail my course and seemed to be in utter despair. However, I persisted in helping her work through her academic problems and granted her an extension for her paper so she was able to finally complete it. The sense of accomplishment and joy I experienced was not in knowing that she eventually passed my course but in reading the heartfelt note she gave me at the end to thank me "for not giving up on her when she had given up on herself." These are the moments when my faith in my abilities as a tutor are reaffirmed. I have also found it extremely gratifying to have past students contact me for assistance even after they have graduated from Brandeis and have professors recommend me to their graduate students.
I would be delighted to work with you and help you progress from being a diffident writer to one who can actually find pleasure in the writing process. A big part of tutoring is chemistry and before deciding on going with Rachana, I wanted to make sure that Rachana is a proper fit for my daughter(and our family). It's only been the second session and both my daughter and I are very happy we found Rachana. My daughter takes a LOOOONG time to warm up and completely open up, but she is quick to know if the person is a proper fit and she feels that way with Rachana. Rachana is able to draw out my daughter and her style is supportive but also challenges my daughter to slowly come out of her comfort zone. Very happy indeed!
Rachana responded to me in an timely manner despite short notice and was very helpful in helping my son edit his junior paper. Thanks Rachana. I am going to recommend her to other friends of mine who may need a tutor to help their children with their homework.
Rachana helped me with the writing. I love her way in explaining and clarifying things. I learned a lot from her.
I really appreciate how Rachana works to help with essay writing. Her critical evaluation of the work is extremely helpful.
On time and very patient. Knew her stuff and really helped me with my assignment. We worked on improving my sentence structure and grammar.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a PhD in anthropology from Brandeis University (2013) and conducted doctoral research on youth culture, education and nationalism on a Pacific Island. I have taught anthropology courses independently and also served as a teaching and course assistant for over 10 anthropology courses. I am an active member of anthropological societies, such as, the Association for Social Anthropology in Oceania (ASAO), and have presented over 15 papers at different international conferences. I have article manuscripts currently under review for publication.
I have a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in English Literature and have been a Writing Consultant at Brandeis University for 4 years. I have assisted students with school assignments, beginning from the first stage of brainstorming, then making an outline, followed by the first draft and final revisions. I have worked with undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of disciplines. I especially enjoy helping students from diverse cultural backgrounds with varying levels of English language proficiency.
In addition to my educational background, which includes advanced degrees in English Literature (MA) and Anthropology (PhD), I have over four years of experience assisting graduate and undergraduate students craft essays, personal statements, dissertation chapters, grant applications, and a variety of written assignments across disciplines. Having published and reviewed articles myself, I understand how agonizing the writing process can be for some, especially when struggling with multiple drafts and revisions of the same manuscript. I strive to make this process as stimulating and informative as possible so that students can learn skills that they may eventually apply to other writing projects as well. When working with a student, I pay close attention to key aspects of writing, such as thesis, motive, structure, grammar, vocabulary, stitching ideas and paragraphs, conclusions, and more. I am happy to tailor my tutoring sessions to match the needs of individual students.
