About Jacob

My passion for the learning process was born out of my family background and has carried itself throughout my life thus far. Coming from a family of teachers, I observed early on the value of education and the joy that comes from helping students to learn new things. Starting in high school, I saw the value of tutoring and have frequently sought out opportunities to help others learn and grow.

As a graduate of the Boston College Honors Program (3.68 Cumulative GPA) and a recipient of the BC Scholar of the College award (given to the authors of the top theses of each graduating class), I have always pushed myself to learn widely and follow my interests. I ultimately graduated with a degree in History, Mathematics, and Asian Studies. In school, I tutored other BC students in Calculus and other mathematics courses. Outside, I have taught English in Boston, China, and Taiwan and tutored students from elementary school through the college level in Mathematics and History. My extensive study of Mandarin Chinese (and a total of three years living in China/Taiwan) allows me to help learners new to the language, as well.

It is my sincere hope to help every student succeed and reach their educational goals. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

Through my volunteer tutoring with the National Honor Society, I have much experience working with high school-level students struggling with subjects including Algebra II.

Calculus

I received a 5 on the AP Calculus exam and tutored Calculus (Calc I, Calc II, and Multivariable Calculus) in college for three years.

Geometry

Among other subjects I have tutored, I frequently had to help others with Geometry while in high school.

Precalculus

In high school, I served as a volunteer tutor, helping others with their Precalculus homework. This counted as my community service for National Honors Society.

SAT Math

I have tutored students studying a wide area of mathematical disciplines. I personally received a 790 on the Mathematics SAT and an 800 on the Mathematics, Level 2 SAT Subject Test.
