About Natalia

Born in the former Soviet Union, St. Petersburg, I emigrated to the USA in 1975 and devoted all my energy to building a teaching career in American universities. After receiving my undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I joined the Harvard University graduate program in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, specializing in the nineteenth-century Russian literature and receiving serious pedagogical training as a Russian language teacher. I have been teaching Russian at all levels since 1983. After completing my PhD at Harvard I went on to revamp and run a successful Russian language program at Princeton University where I taught Russian language and literature for six years. Upon returning to Harvard in 2000, I continued my Russian language teaching for another 13 years until taking an early retirement this year. Over the years my teaching Russian at all levels at Harvard, including specialized courses for heritage speakers of Russian, earned me yearly teaching awards from the Derek Bok Center of Harvard.

My vast experience in teaching Russian to American students and students from Russian-speaking families has enabled me to offer private instruction to students at any level--from complete novices and advanced learners doing research with publications in Russian, as well as heritage speakers of Russian who never received formal education in Russian. My overall teaching goal may be thus formulated: "It's not enough to speak Russian. One should learn to speak it CORRECTLY." To achieve this goal I have effective teaching materials used at Princeton and Harvard that ensure excellent results.

Presently I am teaching Russian part-time at Boston College on MWF. This leaves Tuesdays and Thursdays open for private tutoring at my home in Cambridge. My hourly rate is subject to negotiation. I hope to be of service to a variety of students seeking help with their Russian.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
