I have four years of classroom experience teaching 5th and 6th grade math and science, including extensive tutoring of my students to help bridge developmental gaps in math. I am data- and goal-oriented, and my students typically can demonstrate 2-3 years of growth in math in one school year. My favorite part of teaching is when students are proud of themselves because they are able to attribute their progress to their own hard work. At the same time, I love to make math fun - depending on the student, making math "sticky" might come from playing games, singing songs, solving puzzles, or doing a movement activity. I specialize in teaching reading and problem-solving skills to students who struggle with word problems. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I spent 3 years working in my selective liberal arts college's admissions office. I led tours, completed a summer internship, and conducted over 100 evaluative interviews. I was allowed to read applications and observe the committee's final decision meetings, and I came away with a good sense of what factors mattered most in admitting or rejecting a student. Since then, I have continued volunteer work with my college's admissions office (college fairs and interviews).
I hold a Master's in Elementary Education and have taught 5th and 6th grades for 4 years. I was certified in elementary teaching in one state, and am currently completing the paperwork to transfer it to my current state. Since becoming certified, I have also undergone extensive, continuing professional development.
I have taught 5th and 6th grade math for four years and have completed certification and a master's in elementary education. I also have taught reading, writing, social studies, and science. I have a strong background in multiple learning styles and curriculum development, and I specialize in helping students understand word problems (especially struggling readers). Most importantly, I am truly passionate about elementary math, and I am committed to trying different approaches until each student has found something that works for him or her.
I majored in political science at Haverford College, focusing on urban American politics. I completed a 60-page senior thesis on the effect of community organizing on Obama's presidency. I also studied abroad in Denmark, where my concentration was politics and policies of the European Union. While attending graduate school in education through Teach for America, I continued to study education policy extensively.
