About Harvey

I help students succeed on important writing assignments and with applications/admissions essays. I help approach, plan, improve (proofread), and present in a persuasive and engaging fashion. I can help with research papers, persuasive essays, history papers, admissions essays, and other writing at any phase of the writing process (on-site and online).

I will work with you to help you develop a writing or research plan, create a system to track your sources and drafts, identify reliable sources and ensure adequate attribution. Moreover, I also proofread your existing writing for style and content; grammar and clarity; or meet to discuss general tips for improving writing and study habits, generally. I always track changes and include extensive comments to help improve your writing in the long-run.

I have had the opportunity to research, plan, outline, compose, edit, and proofread, many evidence-based documents in law school and through my various work experiences. As a consequence, I have developed a keen approach to the writing of research, technical, and other persuasive papers. I share the tips, tricks, and approach that I have developed through many hours of writing and share these with my students. Thus, my approach is to help you write more like someone with a rigorous professional education (i.e., law school) without having to endure this challenge yourself!

I have previous experience teaching as a Teaching Assistant to a college professor when I was a student at UCLA. I provided both in lecture support as well as taught a weekly 1 hour enrichment section to a small group of students. During the enrichment sections, I helped clarify confusing concepts in class. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I studied and passed successfully on the first try the most challenging bar exam in the country (California). I developed skill and experience in approaching essays by knowing the core law and organizing the issues and writing persuasively. I can share my experience with those taking the exam for the first time, including: scheduling your study time, forms of learning (auditory, written, and reading), and tracking progress.


I have taken college-level as well as graduate level coursework in business. In particular, I have completed coursework on Business Law at UCLA. Moreover, while in graduate school I successfully completed a course on Finance and Accounting for Lawyers. This course was taught by a JD/CPA. He introduced us to accounting methods, bookkeeping, financial statements, financial analysis, valuation, and other matters relevant for business law. I also completed successfully a course on Law and Economics, which explores the relationship between laws, regulations, and economic principles. Finally, I completed a writing-intensive course in Corporation Innovation and Legal Policy and received an award for excellence in that course.

Moreover, I completed a course in Marketing at the USD Business School, where my project focused on a novel health care delivery model. My role was specifically looking at the effect and interaction between regulations and business opportunities and compliance.

Prior to graduate school, I was a property manager for a small rental operation. I was responsible for basic operations, accounting, vendors, insurance, marketing, screening, and residential services. Currently, I have a professional practice that is also a small business. Thus, I have both substantive and experiential qualification for this subject area. My primary goal is to work with business students with writing, allied field, and qualitative projects (such as, preparing proposals, presentations, and writing in courses such as Business Law).

Career Development

I have a unique combination of experience and educational background that lends itself to helping students and scholars chart a career development plan for themselves. While a student at UCLA, I was a Senior Clerk at the Academic Advising office within the Psychology department and helped explain basic major and departmental policies to undergraduate students. In my later years at UCLA, I was in a competitive business professional organization and was Chair of Chapter Relations. I organized events designed to bring together later-stage students with seasoned individuals already in industry. We introduced students to standardized admission test preparation options, and organized industrial career fairs. Later in law school as well, as a co-chair of the Diversity Committee, I organized a regional conference for pre-law students to introduce them to the application process, study of the law, and provide substantive feedback on their admissions statements. Now, I continue to aid in career development through my active mentorship of UCLA students and my previous role on the UCLA Alumni Association scholarship review team.

My methods start broad and focus on skill, personality, and goals. Next, once the student has identified their general desired, I critically analyze their coursework and work/internship experiences to identify several possible paths. Next, we research the industry and start a plan for learning more about the positions, the people, and the opportunities that they will pursue.

Desktop Publishing

I have many years of experience preparing various documents for work. Including, detailed business reports with standardized styles and headings and unique fonts and spacing (MS Word) and tables of contents, page number, and other indexing and organization methods.

Additionally, my work and education requires me to prepare memoranda, cover letters, blog posts, articles, and other materials. I can show how you can use MS Word and open-source applications such as (GIMP) to prepare high-quality and professional templates as well as other publications.


I have many years of legal education and have earned a J.D. from an ABA-Accredited law school. I was admitted in California to practice law. I have worked in various law-related positions, including: litigation consulting firm, workplace investigations firm, judicial externship at a federal administrative hearing office, various internships at legal clinics and government law offices, and currently practice.

Microsoft Windows

Windows has been the primary operating system on all of my personal computers since Windows 95. I am tech-savvy and have always sought to better understand computers and operating systems. I have compared Windows to Mac and Linux before, which helps me understand how Windows is unique and useful and how it can be improved.

I have an understanding of the fundamental architecture of the operating system and how they interact with your devices and software to solve problems. I can help you understand the purpose of operating systems, the unique attributes of Windows OS, file structure, tags, file extensions, file types, the control panel, memory (types), and how to organize your materials and files taking advantage of some great features of Windows that you may not know previously existed.


I have proofread for advanced college and graduate school students. Moreover, I have proofread in the professional context as well. I look at content, organization, and grammar. I track changes and provide meaningful feedback for long-term success.

Public Speaking

Throughout the course of my education and work, I have had multiple opportunities to develop skill and experience in oral communication and public speaking.

While at UCLA, I successfully completed 4-quarter hours of instruction in a Principles of Communication course. Moreover, also while at UCLA, I served as a volunteer poster-presentation attendee at a widely attended undergraduate research conference.

In law school, I presented oral argument and academic paper presentations to professors and colleagues on multiple occasions. My goal in all instances was to clearly highlight my argument and persuasively present it.

I draw from my formal education at UCLA, as well as actual experience speaking in front of small groups (up to 30 people) to teach students the skills they need to confidently present. I work with students to (1) teach the principles of small-group speaking; (2) understand the role their attitude and physiological response plays; (3) provide tips and skills for smooth and contemporaneous speeches; and, (4) listen and provide feedback for speech rehearsals.


I have technical writing experience through my time at UCLA where I focused on empirical/research-based Psychology. I have successfully completed upper-division coursework on research statistics, research methods and design. Additionally, in the course of my minor in Public Policy, law school, and my practice of law, I spend much of my time researching, outlining, drafting, and writing.

I enjoy teaching and helping students perfect their writing. In particular, I rely on my experience and skill to teach them how to organize, plan, draft, revise, and perfect their most important papers!
