About Yvonne

I am an extremely patient and methodical tutor. My goal is to make sure my students feel completely comfortable using the software they need to learn how to use. I am used to working with people who have little to no computer experience and my experience has been that people who think they know nothing are capable of much more than they realize! If you choose me as your tutor, I guarantee you are hiring someone who will not judge you or make you feel uncomfortable. We all have different strengths and weaknesses and it is not my place to be a judge or a jury. I will work with you until you tell me you feel comfortable doing whatever you are trying to learn how to do.

I recently received my BA from the University of Massachusetts in Boston in the field of Gerontology (elderly and disabled services.) I also worked at Harvard Medical School (HMS) for twelve years as a Digital Imaging Coordinator. When I was at HMS, I created training courses and documentation on how to use digital imaging software and equipment (including, but not limited to Photoshop, PowerPoint, Canvas, scanning, printing, film recording). I also helped Staff members become comfortable using Microsoft Word and Excel.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Macintosh

I have been a Macintosh user since 1995. I worked at Harvard for 12 years and, while there, I was put in charge of a digital graphics facility that was used by three different departments. The computers were all Macintoshes and I got sent to a variety of "bootcamp" courses on how to use the Mac platform so my experience with Macs is fairly sigificant.

Microsoft Outlook

I am qualified to tutor in this specific subject for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that I have been using Microsoft Office programs extensively since 1994. I am also a Graduate Student and I used Microsoft Outlook for work, school and personal reasons. I use Outlook for email and Calendar scheduling extensively and I feel very comfortable using the program and teaching others how to do the same.

Networking (Computer)

I am able to teach people how to do internet research and how (and why) to use different social networks. I also have some light experience doing web design (using text, illustrations, images and html coding) so I understand how web pages work. I worked at Harvard for 12 years as a computer instructor so I also have experience with computer training.

Public Speaking

I am very comfortable at public speaking events. I worked at Harvard Medical School for 12 years. While I was employed there I gave a seminar series where I taught students how to use Photoshop, Canvas and Powerpoint to make their primary data suitable for publication.

When I attended UMass Boston I was nominated by my class to be their official "spokesperson". Because of their nomination, I was our class' lead poster presenter at the UMass Amherst Conference: Map through the Maze. I had to give a talk when I presented the poster covering everything our class did on a research project where we were trying to determine why elders are still being forced into nursing homes despite them wanting to age in their own homes. I also gave similar talks at the 2011 Hynes Convention Center's Gerontological Society of America annual meeting.

I wound up making the Deans list for the final semester in 2012 from having to give so many presentations while taking so many classes (including one graduate level course).
