About Faith

Hi! I'm Faith, a 20 year old student and tutor. I am a graduate of Norfolk Academy and am attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. My personal academics are very strong, having won awards for excellence in multiple subjects, and I really love both learning and teaching. I have tutored several students in subjects such as Latin, English, Physics, Pre-Algebra, Algebra II, Pre-calculus, Calculus, and Spanish. I honestly enjoy spending time with students and taking the time not only to get to know them as learners, but as people as well. I focus hugely on comprehension and understanding for real learning, not just memorization for a test. I will work with a student until he or she is comfortable with whatever material is at hand. I hope to impart a real enjoyment of learning to all my students.

A long standing 7th grade boy I tutored told me that I "kept an upbeat, fun, and positive attitude even when [he] was grumpy," which was often as I always saw him right before dinner. I enjoyed getting to know him and by the end he had greatly improved in his two weakest subjects (pre algebra and life science).

I look forward to getting to know you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I am currently a junior at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I applied to MIT early action and was admitted early action, where the admission rate was 9.5% admission. The only other school I applied to was my backup school, the University of Virginia, and was not only admitted to their engineering school, but was also selected for the engineering Rodman Scholars program, which is only offered to the top 5% of engineering applicants. Interestingly enough, my SAT scores fall in the bottom 25% of MIT, and only the middle 75% of UVA's applicants, and while my academic record is good, I am not the smartest person in the room, I just know the secrets to applying to universities: to be the applicant they are looking for. It changes from school to school. I also have received an NROTC scholarship (valued at 240k). I can coach students on interviewing, essay writing and editing, and the best schools to fit them. I already have many materials written for high school students to use in order to develop themselves for college admission interviews and applications. I know the game, and I know the statistics for all of this college admission strategy.

Handwriting

I am a senior at MIT, studying aerospace engineering. I read and write in 4 languages, and am an accomplished teacher. I have been tutoring elementary aged students for 5 years in many different subjects, and I have the patience to work with students in breaking down the motions for practice. Handwriting is all about practice, patience, and confidence, and I am more than qualified to work with students in this area.

Logic

I am quite accomplished in mathematics and physics, both of which are heavily based on logic. Mathematics instructors have always commended me on my critical thinking and reasoning skills. I am also attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and am considering majoring in mathematics, which is merely applied logic with some syntax involved. This year, I tutored a 7th grader in pre algebra, and helped him heavily rely on logic and reasoning to think through a problem. His 3rd quarter grade (I started tutoring him in the second quarter) was at least 4 points higher than his second quarter math grade. I am quite good at both explaining and thinking through logical sequences.

Study Skills

I have recently graduated from Norfolk Academy, a prestigious and high quality high school in Virginia. I have kept a 4.0 since 9th grade and have a non weighted average of 97%. At least 75% of my classes since 9th grade were college level courses. To keep my grades, I studied for an average of 5 hours a day outside of school while maintaining participation in arts and athletics. I also did a little research while in high school into learning styles. Having identified as all three learning styles at different points in my life, I know how to study for all three. It is safe to say that I have an understanding of how we learn and how to facilitate this into study habits.
