About Gemma

I guide writers through the development of their work — from academic writing to fiction, from application essays and test essays to plays. I have a sub-specialty in working with individuals with disabilities, including executive functioning disorders (such as ADHD), learning disabilities, and anxiety disorders; my unique coaching system supports all writers of all ages and skill levels, from high school students to doctoral candidates, by focusing on the individual's specific writing process. I conduct in-person coaching sessions in the greater Boston area; for those farther-flung, I am happy to arrange sessions via phone or Skype.

I received my master's in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2010, and since then I have worked as a writing coach in various capacities, with a focus on supporting students with disabilities. I have been in residence at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and with the Boston Teacher Residency, providing writing coaching to students in both programs, and I conduct a private business as a writing coach based primarily in Boston and Cambridge.

As a practicing writer myself, I understand how intense and personal the writing process can be, and how much is at stake for writers. I am also a merciless taskmaster who can introduce structure into a process that may seem oppressively difficult. I am eager to provide structure, scaffolding, and support for the way you write.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Since 2009, I have been a writing coach at the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Office of Access and Disabilities Services, as well as coaching students independently. I have consistently supported students with executive functioning disorders, including ADHD, in their written work. I am well-read in the disability, but focus on working from a student or client's skills and strengths.

Dyslexia

Since 2009, I have been a writing coach at the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Office of Access and Disabilities Services, as well as working as an independent coach. I have consistently supported students with learning disabilities, including dyslexia, in their written work. I am well-read in the disability, but focus on working from a student or client's skills and strengths.

English

I am a professional writer who also develops literature curricula for a private education company. I've been working as a writing coach for the last five years and am devoted to student support.

Grammar

I spent two years working as an editorial assistant for an educational publishing company and two years as a private copyeditor. I'm an obsessive grammarian who enjoys helping people unearth the patterns beneath language, both "conventional" grammar and the way we actually speak. As a writing coach, I excel at helping non-native English speakers unearth the grammatical challenges in their writing. (I also won the National Language Arts Olympiad first-place medal when I was in fifth grade.)

Literature

I am a widely published writer of poetry, plays, and fiction who has worked with students of literature for many years. I received my Master of Arts in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. My students always come away with a stronger knowledge of, and deeper engagement with, literary work!

Proofreading

I spent two years working as an editorial assistant for an educational publishing company and two years as a private copyeditor. I'm an obsessive grammarian who enjoys helping people unearth the patterns beneath language, both "conventional" grammar and the way we actually speak. (I also won the National Language Arts Olympiad first-place medal when I was in fifth grade.)

SAT Writing

For the last five years, I've helped guide students through the SAT process. I specialize in particular in the essay, in helping students develop a workable formula for the process, and in helping them distinguish good "test essay" writing from the essay writing skills they need in high school and college. I'm happy to help you crack the code.

Theatre

I worked in theater for more than ten years, as a playwright, director, and stage manager. My work has been produced in New York and Chicago. I have trained with a wide range of prestigious playwrights and directors in multiple cities and am the founder of the Ghana Sustainable Aid Project's Theater and Performance Club in Pokuase, Ghana.

Writing

I am a widely published writer who has been working as a writing coach since 2009. I've supported students as a resident writing coach for a number of schools and programs while simultaneously working with other clients on an individual basis. I structure the writing process in a manner that allows you to do your best and most committed work.

A Very Special Tutor — We are so appreciative to Gemma for everything she has been doing to help my daughter! The two of them have a really good connection, and my daughter no longer loathes writing as she used to. Gemma has really gotten to know my daughter and her way of working. It's all going in the right direction for her, and we really have Gemma to thank for that. She is a very special "find" for us! ...
