Harvard University BA 69
I graduated from Harvard University cum laude with a double major in English and Visual Studies (photography and film making). Since that time, I have made a professional career out of working in the film and media business for non-profit as well as for corporate audiences. My role in this business has been primarily as a Producer/Creative Director, or in other words, in the verbal rather than the technical side of the media production process.
In this capacity, I have also become a tutor and collaborator for many colleagues who, although they are highly adept at the technology needed to turn a creative idea in to reality, lack the verbal skills to prepare and pitch their ideas. As my reputation as a wordsmith grew, I began to tutor and edit written works outside the field of media: copy editing cover letters, evaluating and proofreading full-length fiction and non-fiction manuscripts, and in helping ESL/ESOL speakers write and speak more fluently. As an editor, I make a point of keeping up-to-date on current trends of proper and acceptable English usage.
My work with adults quickly extended to working with younger people, including students with learning disabilities such as ADD and especially students for whom English is not their first language. I help students with the full gamut of English-related assignments: comprehending literature, reviewing the basics of grammar, vocabulary building, crafting college entrance essays, or any particular project that they need help mastering.
Personally, I would describe myself as outgoing, friendly, patient, and someone with a sense of humor. Had a wonderful first lesson with James. He is very helpful and kind. So excited to have more lessons with him.
The class that James give me was excellent. I hope to continue with him after my citizen interview because I need learn conversations (listening and pronounce correctly), about grammatical and vocabulary too.
He helped the boy who never talked to foreign beginning to talk. It's great! And he is really patient tutor. Thanks!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
