About David

I lived in Florida for fifteen years during which I attended two Graduate Schools (the U. of Florida, Gainesville in Anthropology and School of Library Science in Tallahassee) from 1982-1994. During that period I substitute taught in four Florida counties, Dade (Miami), Leon (Tallahassee) Charlotte (Port Charlotte) and Alachua (Gainesville). I also tutored high school and middle school students in SAT Math and English. For the past 10 years I worked as periodicals librarian at Social Law Library, Boston in the John Adams Building, below the Appeals and Supreme Judicial Courts. During that time I briefly tutored U. Mass (College) students in anthropology.
I'm married, live in Cambridge with my wife, who works at Harvard Health Service and my son, 19 and mother-in-law,86. My interests are in American history, world geography and politics, sports, hiking and reading. My approach to tutoring is to first gather an overview of the student's abilities, strengths and weaknesses, as well as the type of teaching method which would be most effective with the particular student's nature and interests. For example, with a person who has difficulty with abstract concepts, I would look for 'hands-on' practical questions and solutions to problems which offer much participation and when possible, relevant correspondence to the student's own life situation. With more advanced pupils, finding streamlined, time-saving methods to solving complex issues, be they verbal or abstract would be developed and practiced.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
