About Jeffrey

Hi, I'm an experienced guitarist and private instructor.

I'm a graduate of Berklee College of Music, have 20 years of playing experience and have been teaching guitar professionally for close to 10 years. I've played in numerous Boston area bands and my own solo projects. I currently have a roster of 35 weekly students, and over the years have taught literally hundreds of students of all ages and levels. This means that I'm not just someone who can play, but an experienced instructor that knows how to help you or your child get the most out of your lesson time. Learn in a friendly, easy-going, relaxed atmosphere. Play music that YOU like, with lesson plans custom-tailored to your needs. My teaching style is straightforward, step-by-step instruction that involves a lot of listening and imitation. I'm careful to assign clear achievable practice goals week to week.

Some of the things I can teach you:

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have been composing music since 1993, attending Berklee College of Music in 2000 and receiving a bachelor's of music degree in Jazz Composition in 2004. While at Berklee, I composed extensively to fulfill my course requirements - which included a 10-minute piece for large jazz orchestra and a portfolio of 12 original compositions - in addition to my personal music writing. My composition teachers included Ted Pease, Ken Pullig, and Greg Hopkins. I also took extensive classes in traditional harmony and counterpoint. I have been writing and recording original music since 2004.

Ear Training

I have a Bachelor's of Music from Berklee College of Music, where I took four semesters of Ear Training as part of the core curriculum. In addition to the required coursework, I also studied Atonal solfege for two semesters. I also employ ear training techniques in my private lessons.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar since 1993, attending Berklee College of Music in 2000 as a guitar principal with a major in Jazz Composition. I've been a full-time professional musician since 2004, playing in several Boston area bands, including my own original projects. Since that time I've consistently maintained a roster of 25-40 weekly guitar students in addition to my gig schedule. I am well-versed in a variety of guitar styles and techniques, and have extensive experience teaching all ages, styles, and skill-levels.

Music Theory

I'm a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, where was I was trained extensively in Music Theory. I incorporate basic music theory into all of my students' lessons. I also teach quite a few advanced students theoretical concepts in a more intensive way, including notation, scales, chord construction, harmonic progressions, and voice leading.

Sight Singing

I received a Bachelor's of Music from Berklee College of Music, for which I had to take four semesters of ear training, in addition to my ear training and atonal solfege electives. Sight singing was the primary component of my proficiency tests for these courses. I am well versed in solfege, intervals, sight reading and vocal technique.

Songwriting

I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2004 with a degree in Jazz Composition. I have been writing original songs for various original projects for nearly twenty years. I have written and recorded five EP's of original material and regularly perform original material at local and regional venues. I work with my own band and as a solo artist.
