About Anna

Bio

I love to tutor and am excited to find myself with enough time to take on a small number of students. I graduated from MIT and am currently working on a start-up part time and at MIT as an instructor. I miss the one-on-one academic environment and am keen to share some of my knowledge. I would like to teach math (through BC calculus), science (physics, chemistry, biology, environmental), engineering (mechanical, electrical) or history (modern European or US). I could also help you prepare for...

I could also help you prepare for the AP exams (I took a number of them and received a string of 5s, even for tests where I did not take the class) or SATs / ACT (I got a 35/36 on the ACT and 800 on SAT II for writing, SAT II for Math II). For the standardized tests, I particularly enjoy working with students so that they can feel like the primary point of the test is to figure out how the test is trying to trick them so that it can turn into more of a game and less of a chore.

I present regularly for work before small audiences (5-10 folks) as well as large (my record so far is more than 4,500!). Public and motivational speaking is one of my favorite ways to spend time. I would be happy to do some coaching in this area as well, either generally or in run-up to a specific event.

I am particularly good at working with a student for a small number of sessions to prepare for a particular exam, get them caught up in a course or debug their learning style. I have worked with elementary, middle and high school students both while in high school and during university. I also worked as a teaching assistant and ran a series of classes during MIT's Independent Activities Period (IAP) for other students, faculty and staff.

I can meet near Alewife, Harvard or MIT and at your house by previous arrangement.

I have presented before groups as large as 4,500, led courses, seminars and projects. I have thought a lot about the mechanism of developing a concept, presentation, talk and then how to deliver so everyone in the audience understands. Growing up I hated public speaking so I have a good sense of what it takes to get to a place where you would rather be in front of a crowd talking about a topic you care about than anywhere else. I would love to help others find that place too!

The reason for my success in tutoring kids is that I am able to help them learn material thoroughly and quickly. Generally, I use spacial reasoning and memory palaces to help them learn content and make this palace the core of each subject -- for chemistry the electron, for physics the dimensions of space and time, for history human nature. I have taught more than 3,000 tutoring sessions and feel well able to help a student looking to improve their overall study kills.

I took a number of mechanical engineering courses while at MIT as part of my degree in Civil / Environmental Engineering and am interested in tutoring this subject. Outstanding

Anna tutored me in Differential Equations. The course was accelerated and also one of the most difficult math courses for engineers. Anna help me break it down into manageable components and get organized in my techniques. Anna basically taught me the entire course in 7 hours. I just received my grade and I passed! Anna is a great tutor, and I put in the time and effort. Together we made it happen. If you need help at the highest level, work with Anna. She has my strongest endorsement and recommendation.

Practical guidance to negotiating engineering in college

Anna spent a lot of time asking questions to determine my daughter's specific needs and offered a lot of useful guidance on negotiating engineering in college.

Mary Ann, 3 lessons with Anna

Enthusiastic and great at diagnosing challenges.

Time well spent as my daughter is not enthralled with chemistry and Anna brings passion and a can do spirit to each session to link concepts together.

Prompt, polite and understanding with teenagers.

Anna shows real skill and insight guiding our adolescent through reviewing for a chemistry exam and offering to teach her good study techniques.

Effective even in the summer!

We were very pleased with Anna and wish she had stayed on as a tutor. If she ever returns, we would hire her again in a heartbeat. Our son needed a refresher in Chemistry. He stayed focused, made progress and learned even though it was August and he had a summer job.. He was motivated and she was a good teacher. She was professional, organized and expert in her field. It was definitely the right match.
