Here are some basic details about my background: I graduated from Williams College with a BA in English, did graduate work in English at UVA, got my MA in English Literature from Rutgers, and I am currently working on my MFA in poetry at UMass Boston. I was a Senior Advisor for the English major in college, and at Rutgers I taught three semesters worth of basic composition to freshmen students.

From this you can gather a number of things. First: I have extensive academic training in the humanities. Obviously, I have a strong background in English literature. But you can't do graduate work in English literature nowadays without a good grasp of history, philosophy, sociology, linguistics, anthropology, and even basic economics. I will be able to help with all of those. Second: I am a writer, and I have taught writing. No matter what your skill level is, no matter what the subject--I can help you with your writing, as I have helped many before you. Third: I am very good at taking standardized tests. You don't get into the best liberal arts college in the US with a low SAT score, and you don't get into two highly competitive graduate programs with a low GRE. The thing to remember about these tests is that they don't necessarily reflect your true academic ability--it's really more about test-taking skills, and getting in the right frame of mind. I can help you develop both.

As a teacher, I will always be kind, honest, patient, and attentive to your needs. Your needs determine the overall trajectory of our lessons. And you will never leave a lesson confused about where you stand or what progress you've made; you will never doubt that I am doing everything in my power to help you. I will challenge you and I will engage you. I will sit down and go over anything with you, no matter what it is, until you understand.

I hope to see you soon.
